Purpose:To define the responsibilities, physical demands and minimum qualifications for the position of Exercise Specialist I

Functions

Affected:Health and Wellness Pavilion Exercise Specialist

Job Summary:

Conducts individual orientations and assessments on program participants. Monitors individual use of facility to insure safety and proper use of equipment. Provides personal exercise and wellness instruction to individuals as assigned. Provides assistance to individuals in area of specialization.

Primary Job Responsibilities:

1)Conducts individual orientations.

  1. Provides accurate information about program or facility to new and potential members or patients.
  2. Instructs individuals in the proper use of equipment, including proper operations and recommended individual settings.
  3. Instructs individuals regarding their responsibilities, including sign in, proper recording of exercise sessions, and symptom reporting.
  4. Orients individuals to facility use, including check-in procedures, locker room use, and special programming.

2)Conducts individual assessments.

  1. In non-clinical settings, screens individuals for possible exercise limitations according to approved procedures.
  2. Conducts fitness assessments according to approved procedures.
  3. In clinical settings, conducts initial assessments on new patients according to approved procedures.

3)Monitors use of facility to insure safety and proper use of equipment.

  1. Observes individuals use of equipment while on duty and provides instruction to those using equipment improperly.
  2. Assists individuals as needed with their exercise or health-related program.
  3. Performs preventive maintenance on equipment daily.
  4. Helps to maintain a clean and secure facility.

4)Provides personal exercise and wellness instruction to individuals as assigned.

  1. Assists individuals with one-on-one exercise instruction as scheduled.
  2. Develops individualized exercise and wellness goals in consultation with participant.
  3. Develops individualized exercise and wellness plan to achieve those goals.

5)Provides instruction or programming in area of specialization.

  1. Works with supervisor to schedule programs and instruction to meet participant needs.
  2. Works to develop or maintain expertise in one or more areas of exercise, fitness, or wellness.

6)Maintains appropriate record keeping for quality control and financial responsibility.

  1. Records assessment results and assures appropriate follow-up per procedures.
  2. Reports exercise sessions as required for proper quality monitoring and billing.
  3. Documents appropriate follow-up with participants, physicians, or corporate clients as needed.

7)Stays abreast of latest knowledge and information on exercise, fitness, and wellness to insure member safety and satisfaction.

  1. Participates in in-services and educational offerings provided.
  2. Maintains CPR certification.

PERSONAL CONTACTS:

INTERNAL:

The Exercise Specialist I has daily contact with the Supervisor and staff and occasional contact with other Methodist Associates.

EXTERNAL:

The Exercise Specialist I has daily contact with program participants. This may include facility members in non-clinical settings and patients in clinical settings. The Exercise Specialist I has occasional contact with physicians and corporate clients.

SUPERVISION GIVEN/RECEIVED:

The Exercise Specialist I is supervised by a Preventive Medicine Manager. The Exercise Specialist I has no supervisory responsibilities.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/CONDITIONS:

Constant non-invasive member contact

Ability to read and write and to communicate orally and in writing with other individuals

Normal hearing; normal vision, including color, night, and peripheral vision

Ability to lift 100-150 lbs. at a time without assistance; ability to push, pull, and carry 50 lbs. at a time without assistance

Ability to stand, walk, climb stairs, sit in one place, squat, kneel, reach, bend, and twist while maintaining balance and coordination

Ability to perform repetitive hand and wrist motion as well as the ability to use hands and feet together for repetitive, coordinated motions

Physical endurance and coordination necessary to demonstrate exercise techniques

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

1.Bachelor's degree in exercise science, physical education, recreation or a related area.

2.Knowledge of exercise and fitness activities, as might be acquired through one year of experience in leading such activities or an appropriate internship.

  1. Current certification in CPR.

4.Ability to model a healthy lifestyle to members and clients served.

5.Ability to organize and complete tasks with minimal supervision.

6.Ability to explain and demonstrate fitness and exercise techniques to others.

7.Ability to demonstrate good customer service skills.

8.Ability to work well as part of a team of professionals.
