/ Governor Thomas Johnson High School is located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains approximately 60 miles north of Washington, D.C., and 50 miles west of Baltimore, Maryland.

DEMOGRAPHICS

/ Current population is1596students drawn from rural, suburban, and urban surroundings. Approximately 20.99% of our students are African-American,4.32% are Asian, 0.31% are American Indian,0.19% Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander, 5.64% multiple races, 38.97% White and 29.57% are of Hispanic//Latino origin. 39%percent qualify for free or reduced lunch. Seventy nine percent go on to two or four year colleges.

/ TJ offers academic, college-preparatory courses (English, mathematics, science, social studies) at each grade level as well as the following instructional levels:

Honors (H)

/ Most challenging; college preparatory coursework emphasizes abstract material and requires extensive independent work to meet rigorous expectations.
Advanced Placement (AP) / Courses are available in the following subjects:

SCHEDULE

/ The two-semester block (4x4) schedule allows students to earn up to four credits each semester in 80-minute classes. It is therefore possible for a student to complete, for example, both French I and French II in the same year, or both AP Calculus AB and AP Calculus BC. These are separate, full-credit courses completed in one semester (half-year) each. Connect is a 40-minute block during which students access supplemental tutoring and enrichment activities.

SPECIAL PROGRAMS /

Mentor Internships

Our students have access to a variety of internships. The National Institutes of Health, National Cancer Institute in Ft. Detrick, Maryland attracts many of our most accomplished students. Area high school students compete for a limited number of half-day internships in which they are paired with a scientist conducting original research.
Open Campus
This option is available to seniors who may earn college credit by attending classes at local colleges. Students may schedule one block of Open Campus for each three credit college course taken.
Dual Enrollment
Some students request dual college and high school credit for enrolling in specific approved college classes. These courses are designated on the transcript. Some courses may be taken at the high school.

Academy for Fine Arts

Advanced study classes in visual arts, theatre and music accommodate those students in Frederick County who demonstrate great interest and ability in the arts. Students audition for this intensive program which consumes half the school day during their sophomore, junior, and/or senior years.
Student Service Learning
Students may earn credit by helping community agencies or by serving as tutors to peers or younger children in an elementary, middle or high school setting.
Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps
The NJROTC accredited curriculum emphasizes citizenship and leadership development, as well as our maritime heritage, the significance of sea power, and naval topics such as the fundamentals of naval operation, seamanship, navigation and meteorology. Classroom instruction is augmented throughout the year by extra –curricular activities of community service, academic, athletic, drill and orienteering competitions, field meets, flights, visits to naval or other activities, marksmanship sports training, and physical training.
English Learner Program
The English Learner program provides English language instruction that assists students with acquiring the basic interpersonal communication skills and essential academic language proficiency to function successfully in a mainstream classroom over time.
