SRE INSET
Example of Staff INSET to discuss SRE
Draft SRE Policy(10 minutes)
Staff were presented with the draft SRE policy last week to read before the meeting. Staff to share any concerns/inaccuracies/typos with me. I will emphasise that this is a draft and areas such as the curriculum will be developed further through discussion with staff and governors.
Living and Growing INSET video clip (20 minutes)
This clip will provide staff with a general overview of WHY we need a SRE programme in school and make some staff realise that it is fine to be concerned/have questions about the delivery of SRE.
It shows the views of:
- young people/young mothers and why they feel SRE would have helped them when they were at school
- Teachers- concerns in delivery/questions asked by children/how should they answer questions
- Head teachers – how they have implemented SRE programmes in their school
- Doctors/health advisers views
- Government ministers views
Developing questions that children might ask about sex and relationships(15 minutes)
I will split the staff into 4 groups and ask them write down questions that children might ask or have asked with regards to:
- Sexual Intercourse
- Contraception
- Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI’s)
- Homosexuality
Split the staff into mixed groups so they have representatives from the different phases. Each group is given a different area of SRE to focus on and are to record in the following format for each of the above categories-
Sexual Intercourse / Questions5-7 year olds might ask / Teachers answers / Questions 7-9 year olds might ask / Teachers answers / Questions 9-11 year olds might ask / Teachers answers
Then each group presents their questions for their topic to the rest of the staff.
Developing answers that teachers should provide when asked about sex and relationships by children(15 minutes)
Tell the staff that we are trying to build up a collection of ‘stock’ answers that we will agree on using if questions are asked by children in or outside of SRE lessons.
Ask the staff to then work in their groups to come up with appropriate answers for each age group and to record them in the columns provided.
Groups to then feedback to the staff the answers they suggested.
If there is time staff will then begin to discuss answers that they agree/disagree with/feel comfortable/uncomfortable with.
