Welcome and Introductions
ACTION ITEMS:
· Approach Claude Steele about visiting UCSF and/or joining 4CI
· Continue Children’s Hospital Oakland – patient issue – discussion (perhaps bring in Rena Pasick)
Agenda #1 – Unconscious Bias Initiative - Contact Dr. Salazar for a copy of his handout/slides.
· Dr. Rene Salazar discussed a new initiative that he is working on with Drs. Elizabeth Ozer and Renee Navarro.
· Key Items:
o Conducted inventory of current trainings/initiatives
o Reached out to DIVA in the SON to learn more about their work for trainees/students
o Conducted literature search – Univ. of Wisconsin and Univ. of Arizona has most comprehensive
o Drafted a presentation to initially focus on faculty (90 min. workshop)
o Initial workshop to faculty went very well
· Discussion Items/Ideas:
o Find a way to apply these concepts to real life situations and activities, especially for staff
o Incorporate training modules
o Incorporate during staff orientations
o Also target postdocs, as they are potential future faculty
Agenda #2– VC Navarro Updates
· Chancellor Susan Desmond-Hellmann is stepping down. Will be the CEO of Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
· Misty Loetterle is resigning from UCSF on February 7. Paul Day will serve as interim Council Manager.
· Climate survey results due back to us in March 2014 after next Regents meeting – Chris Cullander and Alan Carpenter will have custody of the data on behalf of UCSF
· Bert Lubin provided an update on critical patient issue at Children’s Hospital Oakland
Agenda #3 – Staff Recruitment
· Jeff Chiu provided an update on staff recruitment at UCSF
· Goal is getting more qualified, diverse applicants
· Making incremental progress
· Currently have 12 recruiters with each focusing on a different group: - LGBT, veterans, Hispanic, Native, African American
· Attended several outreach events this year
Discussion/Ideas:
- Have a UCSF recruitment app and sites bookmarked at the Public Library – many out of work and low income applicants use the library primarily.
- Add a link on the HR ticket approval for places to advertise likely to attract URM applicants
- Add Temp. Employee Program success stories feature off of HR site to encourage other applicants to consider UCSF
Agenda #4 – SOM Faculty Diversity Initiative – In draft format. Contact Dr. Fuentes Afflick for final version of slides
· Dr. Elena Fuentes-Afflick presented on the new SOM Faculty Diversity Initiative
· In response to LCME report that the SOM needs a strategic plan for increasing diversity of students and faculty.
· Implementation process will begin in the next month
· We can do a better job of nurturing the pipeline for faculty positions
