Required Materials:
•Glencoe McGraw-Hill Algebra 2, The McGraw Hill Companies. (CA edition). 2008.
•Spiral Notebook with Lined Paper (notes during class will be taken on paper, not on the computer)
•Three ring binder with college ruled lined paper
•Pencils with erasers and pens
•Graphing calculator (TI-83 or TI-84)
Prerequisite: Minimum of A- in both semesters of Geometry or a minimum of B- in both semesters of Geometry Honors.
Course Description: This course covers the Algebra II curriculum, but in greater depth and breadth, including an introduction to trigonometry. The material in this course will serve as a foundation for Pre-Calculus, Calculus, and college level mathematics courses. The objectives of this course include: solving equations and inequalities, linear relationships and functions, systems of equations and inequalities, matrices, exponential and logarithmic functions, expansions on the real number system, polynomials and polynomial functions, rational expressions, the use of radicals in equations and inequalities, complex numbers, permutations and combinations, and sequences and series. This course is also developed with its importance to the SAT I and II Reasoning Tests, as well as the ACT. Students must maintain a minimum of B- in both semesters of this course to continue in the Honors Program in math.
Methods of Instruction: Students gain the required knowledge through teacher-led lecture, class discussions, group-based interactions, hands-on learning through technology resources (TI-83 Plus/TI-84 graphing calculator), laboratory investigations, projects, textbook, and communication of mathematics.

•Phones will be confiscated upon sight, resulting in a detention (refer to student handbook). Their use is not permitted at any time.
•IPods, mp3 players, etc will be confiscated upon sight resulting in a detention (refer to student handbook).
•Seating will be assigned, and throughout the year may be changed by the instructor.
•MacBook use will occur periodically in class, but only during times instructed by the instructor. All other times, your MacBooks should remain closed.
•The instructor reserves the right to make modifications to the document at any time. If this happens, students will be notified immediately.
Classwork/Homework: We will focus on mastering a conceptual understanding of the material and developing the ability to think critically about content area. All homework must be completed BEFORE class begins. Late homework will be downgraded. One day late receives a 10% downgrade, two days late a 20% downgrade. Any later than that will receive a maximum grade of 50%.
Make-up Work: For students not in class due to an excused absence
Classwork/Homework: If you are absent, it is your responsibility to find out what you missed and do it at home on your own. Your assignment will be due the class after your return. For instance, if you are absent on a Monday and come back to school on Tuesday, the assignment is due on Wednesday or Thursday, depending on when your next class is.
Tests/Quizzes: If a student is absent the day a test or quiz is given, it is the student’s responsibility to make arrangements with me to make up the test outside of class time within 48 hours of his/her return to school. For example, if Joe Schmoe misses his test on Tuesday and returns to school on Wednesday, he must make arrangements to have completed his exam or quiz before 8:15AM on Friday morning.
*Any exam or quiz missed as a result of an unexcused absence may not be made up and will result in a 0 for that assessment.
**Extensions may be made for special circumstances, such as an extended illness or a prearranged absence.
Grading System:

Quizzes: 20%
Homework/Classwork:15%
Participation: 10%
Final Exam: 25%
•Exams (Midterm, Quizzes, Final) – Subject matter for the exams will come from lectures, assigned readings from the text, and observations from graphing projects. Do NOT allow yourself to fall behind in this course.
•Homework that is handed in will be graded.
•SMCHS Grading Scale will be used and is provided in your student handbook
•Class participation is graded on class attendance, participation in class discussion, daily update of class notebook and binder, evaluation of effort by the instructor, and preparedness of student.
