III.Old Business - None

IV. New Business

  1. Jo Sternberg (Registrar) and Charlene Gima would like the committee to discuss and think about two issues: 1) difficulty enrolling international students and 2) low enrollment by students who live in the communities served by HonCC (Kalihi area).

DISCUSSION:

  • The International Education Committee encourages international students to come to HonCC. Currently, HonCC has exchange and visit programs, but due to the red tape and other reasons, it is difficult for international students to come to HonCC when not through some kind of program.
  • Kapiolani CC has many international students. The Honda Center is housed at Kapiolani CC.
  • Campus strategic goal is to increase international students by one student each year for next five years.
  • An international student has a F-1 or M-1 status. In the US for Educational purposes.
  • The barriers for an international student may include: the need to take full load, financial aide issues, and paying bills

QUESTIONS GENERATED (but not answered):

  • How does HonCC market the school/program abroad?
  • How many international students do we have?
  • What does the Honda Center do?
  • Can we work with the Honda Center?
  • What are the reasons why international students do not come to HonCC?

IDEAS:

  • Create Ambassadors- students who study at HonCC, then return to their home country to recruit other students. HPU does this.
  • HonCC is currently building up STEM programs, building a Makery and a pre-engineering emphasis. These will be housed in the new Building 5. Marketing these programs abroad may attract international students.
  • Look at Kapiolani CC or HPU as a model
  • Look into what the Honda Center does and if they can help HonCC (in addition o KCC)
  • Invite the Honda Center to participate in the International Event
  • Ask Billie to contact radio stations (like Japanese stations) to promote international students
  • Start an International Club
  • For local recruitment:
  • Advertise Science Fairs and Science Bowl to network with advisors and teachers who could help promote HonCC
  • College Fair at the Convention Center in October and November

ACTION:

  • Charlene to bring information to International Education Committee.
  • Charlene to ask Jo to get more data related to international students and student demographics (e.g. how many international students do we currently have).
  • Charlene to ask Jo what specific areas she may need help with(or if brainstorming ideas is what she was expecting)
