The Latin word 16 which the hippocampus derives its name means a seahorse. The hippocampus is a part of the forebrain, located in the medial temporal lobe. It is thought 17 a part in memory and spatial navigation. Humans and other mammals have two hippocampi, one in each side of the brain. Neuroscientists are not entirely sure of the precise role of the hippocampus, but there is no doubt 18 it has an essential role in the formation of new memories about experienced events. Some evidence suggests that 19 these forms of memory often last a lifetime, the hippocampus 20 to play a crucial role in the retention of the memory after a period of consolidation. Damage caused 21 the hippocampus usually results in profound difficulties in forming new memories, and normally also affects access to memories 22 the damage. Although the retrograde effect normally extends some years prior to the brain damage, in some cases older memories 23 . Damage to the hippocampus does not affect some aspects of memory, 24 the ability to learn new skills (playing a musical instrument, 25 ), suggesting that such abilities depend on a different type of memory and different brain regions.

Like the body's muscles, bones, and other vital organs, the brain feels the effect of aging. Through years of constant use and biological wear and tear, the brain gradually loses some of its sharpness in processing information and in relaying the multitude of signals essential to day-to-day functioning. As people begin to age, they may begin to have problems with memory. One of the most noticeable problem areas involves the transient forgetting of names. Virtually everyone has this problem in older age.
It is important to note that normal age-related memory loss does not indicate diminished intelligence or ability to learn. The brain may simply need more time to recall information from memory or to learn new information. Simple forgetfulness is not a disease. Studies on learning and memory constitute an active area of research for many neuroscientists. In general, how the brain selects and stores information falls into three categories. Each category serves a distinct purpose and is generally independent of intelligence or level of education. Memory categories include:
Short-term/temporary recollection. If you are calling the florist, you look upthe phone number and remember it long enough to place the call. Once you havefinished the call, the information vanishes. If you were interrupted before makingthe call, you may lose this material.
Long-term (recent). This category preserves the recent past, such as what youhad for breakfast today, or the outfit that you wore a few days ago.
Long-term (remote). This records the distant past. These memories, learned 10 or 20 yearsago, form your knowledge base. This category can include snatchesof a conversation or a tune from your high school fight song. Other informationin this memory store shapes your personal history, such as what you were doingthe day President John Kennedy was assassinated.
Aging does not generally affect short - or long-term (remote) memory. These functions are well-preserved. However, long-term (recent) memory often declines with age. To store and retrieve recent information from long-term (recent) memory, the brain performs a complex chain of chemical and electrical functions involving nerve cells. As one ages, some of these cells may deteriorate and function less efficiently.

Throughout human history, we can often find some great people who are famous for their great art works or scientific achievements. However, there are still other great souls who are worth our praise and honor, because of their divine and charitable spirits and deeds.
If we visit MountBerry, Georgia, we can find a group of schools built especially for children dwelling in the mountains. Those schools and the mountain are named after Martha Berry, who herself is a daughter of a Georgian Mountaineer.
Martha Berry was born in 1866. She was luckier than other Georgian mountain children because she received an education. Nevertheless, she never felt proud and never forget other poor children of the mountains whose parents wouldn’t afford to send them to school. In 1902, Martha made up her mind to start a school for those children. At first, the school was housed in a small log cabin and there were only five children. Now, more than ninety years later, there are a few Berry Schools in this area, with a total of over one thousand students and a waiting list of about five thousand.
In Martha’s late years, she received many medals and honors for what she had done for the poor mountain kids of Georgia. In 1931, she was awarded one of the twelve most important women in America. She never stopped working for the mountain children until she passed away in 1942. Her spirits and deeds are worthy of being remembered and honored. Her devotion will certainly inspire more and more great souls to build up a promising future for human beings.
