Summer Learning - PASESummer Teaching Fellows

For over fifteen years, the Partnership for After School Education (PASE) has engaged with summer programs in closing the summer learning gap. We have worked with summer camps throughout NYC to integrate their summer program offerings with activities that support children’s school-year learning and prepares them to meet the challenges of school in the fall.

In 2016, we are excited to invite summer camp/programs to apply to be a host site for a Summer Teaching Fellow. The Summer Teaching Fellow program provides interested and qualified summer camp programs with a trained college student who can provide a range of services including, but not limited to: developing and (co)facilitating educational enrichment and specialty activities, curriculum development, and small group and individual tutoring to children who could benefit from additional support. PASE recruits, hires, trains and provides a stipend for each Fellow.

Who are Summer Teaching Fellows?

Summer Teaching Fellows are current undergraduates attending competitive colleges throughout the country. All have demonstrated prior experience working with children in settings such as camps, school internships, and volunteer tutoring and mentoring programs. Many are pursuing future careers in education or social services and are seeking additional direct experience working with children. Summer Teaching Fellows are selected through a competitive interview process.

What Training and Supervision do Summer Teaching FellowsReceive?

PASE provides a multi-day pre-service training to all Fellows in mid-June to prepare them for theirwork in urban summer programs. Topics include: behavior management & group facilitation, child development, academic enrichment activities, theme-based planning, effective communication with supervisor and peers, and child abuse identification and planning.

Throughout the summer, PASE hosts supervision meetings on Friday mornings. PASE also conducts a minimum of one site visit to each host site throughout the summer. Fellows are required to complete a work plan with their host site that outlines their duties and schedule.

Additionally, we ask that each Summer Teaching Fellow participate in any pre-camp training and on-going summer camp staff meetings at their host site and that the host site identify anon-site supervisor.

Who Pays for the Summer Teaching Fellow?

PASE provides a stipend to each Fellow. There is no cost to the site. Each Fellow completes a weekly time sheet which requires the on-site supervisor signature.

How are Summer Teaching Fellows Matched with Host Sites?

PASE factors the focus and stated need of the host site along with the experience and interests of each Fellow. We also take into account the location of the camp in relation to where Fellows live.
