COURSE DESCRIPTION: Intermediate Reading & Composition (3 units)
This is a course in reading and writing designed to strengthen the student's ability to use basic communication skills, including grammar, punctuation, & mechanics. Instruction includes the assignments of expository & argumentative essays, online grammar and writing exercises, & a research paper. (Prerequisite: English 21 or placement exam.)

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Upon successful completion of this course, a student will be ableto:
- Produce a 350-500 word essay, utilizing standard rhetorical modes and maintaining unity and coherence.
- Produce a 4 to 5 page research paper in MLA format, which supports an argument.

GRADING:
Checking Grades:Students must monitor their Canvas grade book for discrepancies and contact the professorforadjustments immediately after a grade is posted. Grades and/or missing work will not be discussedafterthe final essay isdue. No incompletes will be given for thisclass.
Grading Standards: 90-100% = A; 80-89%=B;
70-79%=C. Therefore 70-100% is passing.
0-69% is failing.

MAJOR ASSIGNMENTS:
Essays
All assignments are uploaded through Canvas and do not require a hard copy. Students must submit essays by the due dates. Essays may not be emailed tothe instructor. Students are responsible for submitting documents in Word or PDF format. Most writing applications that are not Microsoft Word have an option under “File” to “Save As” or “Export As” PDF. All writing assignments must be in MLA format. Allessays that require sources must have in-text citations and a Works Cited page. Your final essay, the research paper, is worth the most points. It is the culmination of all we have learned throughout the semester.
Prewriting
Prewriting is informal writing and brainstorming done before your first draft. Prewriting instructions for each essay can be found at the bottom of the essay guidelines in the folder “Prewriting and Essay Guidelines.” A prewriting assignment is not a rough draft. It is a set of numbered activities you should complete. I do not grade spelling and grammar for prewriting, but I do expect you to follow proper MLA format.
Discussion Board
Yourinitialpost,basedonthetopicpresented,isdueby11:59PMWednesdayevenings.Your second post responds to other students and is due by 11:59 PM Sundayevenings.You need to respond to at least two student posts in the discussionforum to receive full points. Every post (or reply to a post) that you write has the same requirement; it should be fullsentences written using college level English. Initial posts are due first, while responses are often due a fewdays later.
PLEASE NOTE: Replies that say “good job,” “Dear Tom,” “I agree with you” and similarstatements don’t count as sentences. If you agree or disagree, please state why. Quizzes
Quizzes are available through Canvas. Due dates are listed on our schedule. Please make sure to take every quiz by the deadline. You may take each quiz unlimited times. The highest grade will stay in the gradebook. All quizzes are untimed and open book. Quizzes cover book chapters and MLA topics.
Group Work
In groups of 3-4 students, you will create a document called “How to Follow MLA and Avoid Plagiarism.” Imagine that this document is going to read by incoming freshmen. Using what you’ve learned from the MLA folder and the Plagiarism Certificate, create a document with your group that gives students tips on how to format their paper, how to paraphrase, and how to avoid a charge of plagiarism. All group work is done virtually. Be sure to use your own words, but feel free to be creative. Make this document at least 1 page long.
Peer Review
For essays 2-4, you will submit a rough draft of your essay on the Wednesday of the week before the final draft is due. You will then leave comments on two other students’ rough draftsthe following Sunday. Use this feedback to improve your essay. You will receive 10 points for submitting a rough draft and 10 points for reviewing the drafts of two other students (total possible points: 20).
Final Exam
The final exam covers a combination of topics featured in the MLA quizzes. The final is timed and open book. It may only be taken one time.

ATTENDANCE/PARTICIPATION:
- Active participation is essential to this course. You must keep up with readings, participate in discussions, and complete quizzes and writing submissions. Duringthesemester,ifyoudonotdemonstrate yourpresenceonaweeklybasisviayourpostingsandthesubmissionofyour required homework, you will be dropped from thisclass. Students are dropped fornon-attendance.
- If you do not post your first discussion board postingby Wednesday, August30, 2017, at 11:59pm of the first week, you may bedropped.

AcademicHonesty:
Plagiarism is the use of another person’s words as if they were your own. Plagiarism will result in afailingpaper and possibly failing the class. By following MLA conventions, you limit your chance ofplagiarism.
If you do not use MLA formatting including in-text citations and a Works Cited page, you will receivean“F” for your paper. If you have doubts about how to follow MLA format to document sources, checkwithyour instructor before the paper isdue. Cheating or the copying of another’s work is of no value in terms of your progress. Students are expected to follow the Standards of Student Conduct as outlined in the LAMCCatalog.

- Drop without receiving a W, without incurring fees, and with a refund: Sept 10.(Remember, in LACCD, you only get 3 attempts per class. A “W” counts as an attempt. Drop before this date to avoid a dropped class counting as 1 attempt.)

Enrollment Limit: 3 Repeat Rule
There is a new LACCD enrollment limit. The limit is now three times to takea class and includes W (withdrawal), D, F, and NP (no pass) grades. Students will not be allowed to register for any course in LACCD if there are three recorded attempts for that course in any combination of W, D, F, and NP grades.

- An online course requires consistent access to a computer, a strong, reliable internet connection, andsomebasic knowledge on using email, word processing programs, and internet browsing. If you are not competent intheseskills, consider taking a traditional lectureclass.
