Grade 10 Chemistry - BALANCING CHEMICAL REACTIONS

For each of the following reactions NEATLY write ON A SEPARATE PIECE OF PAPER the:

i) Word Equation

ii) Balanced Chemical Equation(with states)

iii) Type of Reaction

  1. Potassium metal is placed in water and aqueous potassium hydroxide and hydrogen gas are produced.
  2. Iron metal reacts with oxygen gas to produce solid rust (iron(III) oxide).
  3. Zinc metal reacts with aqueous lead(IV) nitrate to produce aqueous zinc nitrate and lead metal.
  4. Calcium chloride solution reacts with silver nitrate solution to produce a white precipitate, silver chloride, and aqueous calcium nitrate.
  5. Solid calcium carbonate decomposes into solid calcium oxide and carbon dioxide gas.
  6. Magnesium metal will react with hydrogen sulphate solution (=sulphuric acid) to produce aqueous magnesium sulphate and hydrogen gas.
  7. In the space shuttle, hydrogen gas reacts with oxygen gas to make water and energy.
  8. Carbon monoxide and hydrogen gas are produced when carbon is placed in heated water.
  9. Nitrogen monoxide from automobile exhaust reacts with oxygen to produce nitrogen dioxide (a toxic brown gas which is a major component of smog)
  10. When copper(II) sulphate solution is mixed with sodium sulphide solution, a sodium sulphate solution and a green-brown solid, copper(II) sulphide are formed.
