Mr. Stephane’s Grade 1 Class
Literacy
In our writing program, we are currently learning to create lists, and organize our ideas to write simple stories. We recount personal experiences in our journals every week (journal personnel). The students are also learning to use reading strategies such as making connections and asking questions to help them make sense and meaning of what they are learning. Students are now rotating through 4 learning centres (stations) to help them develop reading, writing, listening and speaking skills.
Numeracy
Students are learning to solve math problems involving addition and subtraction of 2-digit numbers. We are learning to use their French language skills to explain the strategies they use to solve math problems. Students are also practicing telling time and reading clocks. Practice at home is important. A good website is www.mathisfun.com
Science and Social Studies
In Social Studies, the students are learning about their local community by investigating services and occupations (e.g., Police officer, lawyer, nurse, etc.). In Science, students are investigating structures that are built for a specific purpose and then determining how their design and materials suit their purpose.
We hope to have you visit our classroom during Brimwood’s Science Fair the first week in May. Watch for more information.
Library
Book exchange will be on Day 5 with Ms. Singh in the library. Please ensure that your child’s book is returned on or before that day.
