Scope and Content:

The 38-page typed play, “The Greenwood School,” takes place in the 1890s in a one-room brick school house. The teacher is Elias Brewer, “a young man of the neighborhood.” The story tells of the trick which the students played on the teacher, resulting in his near drowning.

Page 24 states: “At the close of the five month term of school, the greenies of 1890-1891 were not only well-disciplined but also the equals of the scholarly pupils of the town.” They children present a show for their parents in which they perform and exhibit farm animals. The conclusion of the show is that Mr. Brewer’s wig is on fire and is calmly stamped out. A judge finds the students not guilty of ducking their teacher, because it was all in fun and they had helped to revive him.

The final paragraph of the play reads: “Lately I returned to the locality of the Greenwood school building and it is in fair condition except the brick beneath the window through which Edmund threw the ball that barely missed his aim on that first day of school taught by Elias Brewer of the long, long ago. On the crumbling old black board were the names of some of the long, long ago attendants.”
