Utopia Ad Assignment

The setting of The Giver is an imaginary utopia created by the author Lois Lowry. A utopia is an ideal place or society in which people live together in peace and happiness. In a utopia, the welfare of the society is more important than the welfare of the individual.

For this project, your group will dream up your own utopian society, then create an advertisement to sell it to your classmates (aka, you need to convince them to move to your utopian world). Your ad must incorporate EACH of the three appeals of persuasion (ethos, logos, and pathos) and at least ONE fallacy.

Group Members:______

Name of your utopia:______

In addition to the appeals and a fallacy, your ad must also include ALL of the following:

·  Title/Heading(s): This should be written in large, bold letters. Some advertisements include sub-headings that add to, or elaborate on, the main title in smaller letters. Carefully consider your diction and choose words that will best appeal to your audience.

·  Copy: This is the main text on your ad. The text of your ad should emphasize the message you are trying to communicate to your audience. This is the portion of your poster in which it might be good to include your fallacy. Note that while the words are the most important element of your ad, they should be complemented by the artwork.

·  Motto/Symbol: You must create an original motto and symbol for your utopia and include both somewhere on your ad. You should also include additional information such as phone number, address, website link, or social media page so that interested parties can learn more about joining your utotpia. These should be congruent with your overall message and tailored to your target audience.

·  Artwork: This may include photographs, drawings, or other graphic elements. Some ads have only a single visual, while others have many. Make sure you consider your target audience when determining the type of graphics you want to include.
