Girls on the Run
October 8, 2018
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Welcome to the Girls on the Run (for 3rd through 5th grade girls)/Heart & Sole (for 6th through 8th grade girls) at Barrington Middle School Prairie Campus. There are so many extracurricular activities to choose from nowadays so we are thrilled you chose this one! We think we are pretty awesome and that the girl you enrolled in the GOTR is as well! Throughout the GOTR program, the girls will explore their beliefs, challenges, and things they are experiencing in their young lives. Our trained (and amazing!) coaching staff will help the girls gain a better understanding of who they are and what’s important to them. During the program, we will also focus on the importance of teamwork and healthy relationships, and what role they can play in positively impacting and shaping our world.
Obviously running and physical activity are components to our program, after all the word “run” is in it! It is our hope that the girls gain an appreciation for physical activity throughout the program, and this inspires her to continue to live a healthy and active lifestyle for the rest of her life. At the end of the program, our team will participate in a Girls on the Run 5k (3.1 miles) run. It’s an exciting way to end a season! This run is purely for fun and is a non-competitive event. Completing the 5k gives the girls a real-life goal to work towards and see firsthand all their hard work and training pay off. Crossing the finish line is just the beginning for the girls….the real journey and accomplishment is each girl realizing her full potential and that who she is, is enough. That she is a strong, confident, and vibrant person that has a purpose in this world of ours.
What Will The Girls Be Doing?
Each group of girls will be supervised by at least two adult coaches trained in the Girls on the Run curricula and philosophies. Girls do NOT need to be runners to participate. Each practice will include a warm-up, games and activities designed to get the girls moving while incorporating the ideas being discussed that day, and a cool-down giving girls the opportunity to discuss any final thoughts on the events of the day.
Practice Times are Mondays and Thursdaysfrom 3:00-4:20 p.m. There will be no practices over spring break.

Girls on the Run
There is a fee for each girl to participate in the GOTRC program. Program fees are based on a sliding scale determined by the percentage of students receiving free/reduced school lunch at that site. The cost per girl at our site is 125 dollars.Families requiring financial assistance can apply when registering for the program.
The program fee covers:
- Practices, including all related curriculum materials.
- Healthy snacks that will be provided at each practice.
- Program t-shirt and water bottle.
- Entry to the end-of-season 5k and event activities which include tiara decorating, face painting, etc.
- Transportation to and from the 5k if the site coordinator opts in.
- Girl gift and medal at the 5k.
What Are The Expectations For The Girls and Parents/Guardians?
- Girls should come to each practice dressed and ready to participate. They should wear comfortable clothing and running shoes.
- Girls are expected to attend all practices.
- Girls are expected to be picked-up on time.
5k Day!
Each girl’s program registration includes her entry for the 5k event. She will need to have a Running Buddy (adult chaperone) to run with her, keep her safe on the course, and encourage her throughout the run! Please help your participant start thinking about possible Running Buddies. Each Running Buddy MUST register for the 5k! GOTRC has a group of female volunteers that come to the 5k as Running Buddies for those who do not have one. These females have completed background checks. If you need help finding a Running Buddy, please let your Site Coordinator know. The 5k is open to the public, so any friends or family members can register to run too!
Thank you for your interest in the program and here’s to a joyful, positive, and life-changing season!
