English II Semester II, 2nd Composition: PoetryResearch Essay
You must submit this Composition to turnitin.com AND hand in a printed copy to the instructor. Any plagiarized paper will receive a “zero” and the student will be reported to the Dean for disciplinary action as explained in Lancer Life.
PURPOSES:
To learn how to use the library for research
To learn and review the steps of the research process
To write a formal research paper, free of grammatical and/or structural errors
To learn more about World literature by exploring the background of a poet who is not American
DIRECTIONS: Students will write a 2-3 page essay containing a minimum of 5 paragraphson a Poet of their choice as explained in the “Instructions for Research Paper” handout. The paper must be typed in 12 point Times New Roman font, be double-spaced, follow all MLA guidelines, and contain a Works Cited page.
FOCUS: After researching a selected poet, the focus of this essay will be toexplain how your poet is unique and different from other poets. To do this, you can focus on any number of the following things: his/her technique, style, unique perspective, themes, subject matter, or what the poet represents. You mustmake a contestable argument! You are not just providing facts and interesting information about your poet’s background. Instead, you will use quotesto explainhow your poet is unique and different from other poets.
FORMAT: Essays should include the following:
Introduction Paragraph:
6-10 sentences—should include a hook, background information, and your thesis
Introduction must include the name of the poet, the different sources used, and a synopsis of your overall argument.
Body Paragraphs (at least 5):
Each body paragraph must contain a topic sentence (TS) that explains what points will be addressed in the body paragraph, two concrete details (CDs) that support the topic sentence, and commentary that explains why the concrete detail supports the topic sentence.
Your essay must contain at least 6different quotestaken from at least 3different sources and only one source can come directly from an internet website.
There must be one sentence (Concluding Sentence) for every body paragraph which sums up the main idea of the paragraph and transitions into the next body paragraph.
Conclusion Paragraph:
Your final paragraph readdresses and affirms the thesis. Make sure you have supported and proven your thesis statement (argument).
It also summarizes and reminds your reader of the points you brought up in the essay.
