ROLE DESCRIPTION

ASSISTANTHEAD OF HOUSE(Boarding)

ROLE PURPOSE

Assistant Heads of the Boarding House assist the Director of Boarding and the Head of House with the effective implementation of the College’s pastoral care and student management program within the Boarding environment.

As the assistant leader of a particular Boarding House, an Assistant Head of House has delegated responsibility for assisting the efficient operation and team leadership of that House. This includes helping to monitor the academic and spiritual development, and pastoral care and discipline of each student in the House.

Assistant Heads of House work together with the Head of House tomonitor the overall welfare, social development and academic progress of each student in their care.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITY

Assistant Head of Boarding House is accountable to the Director of Boarding, through the Head of Boarding House, for the effective implementation of the role. This will include:

Attending weekly staff meetings

Chairing year group meetings

Participating in the co-curricular programme of the House

Supporting the Mission Statement of the College

Implementing all house regulations and procedures

Maintaining effective communication with the Head of House at all times

Playing an important part in the overall pastoral programme of the House

Making sure that your involvement extends well beyond “rostered duties”

ROLE ACCOUNTABILITY

1.0In supporting the Head of Boarding House, anAssistant Head of Boarding Houseis expected to exercise Community Leadershipby:

1.0.1Promoting positive interpersonal relationships within the Boarding and Day schools, which reflect Christian values

1.0.2Promoting processes that encourage communication, consultation and teamwork within the Boarding community

1.0.3Supporting and attending Boarding activities and special events

1.0.4Fostering the involvement of parents in the life of Boarding

1.0.5Contributing to a spirit of welcome and hospitality in the Boarding House

2.0In supporting the Head of Boarding House, an Assistant Head of Houseis expected to exercise Educational Leadershipby:

2.0.1Supervising organised prep in a way that promotes a positive working environment

2.0.2Monitoring the academic study habits & progress of the students in their House

2.0.3Liaising with the Head of House as appropriate

3.0In supporting the Head of Boarding House, an Assistant Head of Houseis expected to exercise Administrative/Organisational Leadership by:

3.0.1Maintaining a personal high standard of role modelling for the students of the Boarding Community

3.0.2Maintaining an environment of respect for all through the promotion and monitoring of appropriate behaviour and use of language between students

3.0.3Providing effective regular communication to students concerning Boarding day to day operation, policy and administration decisions

3.0.4Liaising with Boarding House Tutors to ensure the efficient conduct of daily House Roll Call, Leave arrangements and Record Keeping

3.0.5Assisting the Head of House to ensurethat appropriate supervision is provided at all times throughout the House and liaising with the Head of House to arrange supervision in the event of a Tutor being unavailable

3.0.6Attending regular Boarding House management meetings

3.0.7Coordinating WeeklyTown Leave within the House

3.0.8Assisting the Head of House to organise regular House Meetings which provide opportunities for developing student leadership

3.0.9Monitoring and directing students in matters to do with attendance, uniform, grooming and courtesy

3.0.10Assisting the Head of House to organise the House for involvement in House and Whole Boarding Community activities

3.0.11Monitoring and liaising with the Head of House and House Residential Tutors on individual students’ socialprogress within the House

3.0.12Responding quickly and appropriately to phone calls and enquiries from parents

4.0In supporting the Head of Boarding House,an Assistant Head of House is expected to exercise Pastoral Leadershipby:

4.0.1Developing and leading an effective House Team

4.0.2Modelling effective and proactive pastoral care, characterised by:

  • A true demonstration of care for each person
  • A school environment that is positive and safe
  • The application of Christian values
  • Clear and consistent expectations of student behaviour
  • Ensuring that pastoral care within the House encourages positive student behaviour
  • Ensuring that the exercise of student management within the House is fair and consistent and that students learn to take responsibility for their actions
  • Establishing a positive relationship with each student in the House
  • Taking an active interest in the personal, spiritual, academic and social development of each student in the House
  • Offering support to students informally and formally and/or referring students to the Counsellor
  • Liaising with the Head of House, on specific issues of concern related to individual students
  • Managing student behavioural issues in collaboration with Head of House and House Residential Tutors
  • Ensuring an efficient flow of appropriate information about students to relevant staff members

Pastoral Leadership (continued):

4.0.11Leading the Tutors of the House effectively

4.0.12Monitoring the work of Boarding House Staff, to affirm and support them in their roles

4.0.13Encouraging each student’s involvement in College and House activities outside the classroom

4.0.14Preparing and, where possible, being present at activities organized on a House basis.

4.0.15Gathering the House, or groups within the House, to celebrate and recognise eventsand people, and to promote House spirit

4.0.16Assist the development offormal and informal leadership roles for senior students within the House, and supporting the students in these roles

4.0.17Being proactive in regard to liaison with parents, particularly regarding leave, by phoning or emailing, and liaising with the Head of House

4.0.18Collaborating with the Head of House and Residential Tutorsto review the effectiveness of Operational Systems, Pastoral Care and Student Management programs and practices in the House

5.0LENGTH OF TENURE

An Assistant Head of House is appointed on contract for a period of one year renewable on the completion of a successful Performance Appraisal.

6.0APPRAISAL/REVIEW CONDITIONS

Appointees to this position will be required to undergo a term of probation followed by a Performance Appraisal with the Director of Boarding.
