Early Models
- Remove the serpentine drive belt.
- Remove the power steering fluid from the reservoir.
- Remove the reservoir mounting bolts and remove the reservoir from the vehicle by disengaging the reservoir tubes from the adapter.
- Remove the belt tensioner.
Power steering pump pulley removal & installation—Deville and Fleetwood
- Remove the power steering pump pulley using tool J-29785-A or equivalent. Hold the body of the tool with a wrench and turn the bolt into the body of the tool to remove the pulley from the shaft.
- Remove the pressure line fitting from the pump.
- Remove the pump mounting bolts.
- Use a small prybar to disengage the return line adapter clip from the adapter.
- Disengage the adapter from the pump inlet. Make sure the O-ring is removed from the inlet port.
- Remove the adapter from the return line.
Power steering pump lines and adapter—early model Deville and Fleetwood
To install:
- Inspect all adapter O-rings for proper positioning or damage. Replace any cut or damaged O-rings.
- Insert the return line adapter clip on the adapter at the return line port. Make sure that the beveled edges of the clip are facing outward.
- Position the adapter on the pump, inserting the pump inlet tube until fully seated.
- Position the pump in the vehicle while inserting the return line into the adapter port. Make sure that the line is fully seated and is retained by the adapter clip.
- Install the pump mounting bolts but do not tighten at this time.
- Install the pressure line fitting to the pump.
- Tighten the pump mounting bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm) and the pressure line fitting to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
- Press the pulley onto the pump shaft using tool J-25033-B or equivalent. The face of the pulley hub must be flush with the pump shaft.
- Position the belt tensioner mounting bolt in the vehicle.
- Install the reservoir by carefully inserting the reservoir tubes into the adapter ports. Use a rocking motion to fully seat the tubes in the adapter. Install the reservoir mounting bolts.
- Install the belt tensioner and tighten the mounting nut to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
- Install the serpentine drive belt.
- Fill and bleed the power steering system.

Late Models
- Remove the pump drive belt.
- Remove the belt tensioner, if necessary for access.
- Remove the power steering pump pulley using tool J-29785-A or equivalent. Hold the body of the tool with a wrench and turn the bolt into the body of the tool to remove the pulley from the shaft.
- Remove the pressure line fitting from the pump. Remove the return line from the adapter using tool J-36391 or equivalent.
- Remove the pump mounting bolts and the pump adapter assembly.
- Disengage the adapter from the pump inlet. Make sure the pump O-ring is removed from the inlet port.
To install:
Power steering pump mounting—late model Deville and Fleetwood- Inspect all adapter O-rings for proper positioning or damage. Replace any cut or damaged O-rings.
- Position the adapter on the pump, inserting the pump inlet tube until fully seated.
- Position the pump on the vehicle while inserting the adapter into the reservoir. The reservoir tubes do not need to be fully seated.
- Insert the return pipe into the adapter port, making sure it is fully seated.
- Install the pump mounting bolts but do not tighten at this time.
- Install the pressure line fitting to the pump.
- Tighten the pump mounting bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm) and the pressure line fitting to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
- Press the pulley onto the pump shaft using tool J-25033-B or equivalent. The face of the pulley hub must be flush with the pump shaft.
- Install the belt tensioner, if removed, and tighten the mounting nut to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
- Install the pump drive belt.
- Fill and bleed the power steering system.
