·  Words and print are seen over and over again to build reading fluency and confidence. Word-decoding skills and reading strategies are strengthened.
·  The emphasis is on the comprehension of the story as a whole. Students are immersed in language.
Guided Reading
·  Teacher directed with the student reading. / ·  Small groups of students flexibly grouped according to reading levels and instructional needs. / ·  Common reading material, Harcourt student anthologies, basals, novels, short stories, leveled book collections
·  Science and Social Studies material / ·  The teacher selects & introduces a text that can be read instructionally by the students.
·  The teacher chooses the skills/strategies focus based upon the needs of the group.
·  The teacher conducts running records with 1 focus student per group daily.
·  Each student reads the text independently (not Round Robin).
·  Teacher coaches in Reading Strategies as the student reads the text.

Read Aloud
·  Teacher selected text.
·  Teacher does the reading. / ·  Whole class / ·  Quality literature of all types / ·  Reading aloud broadens children’s understanding of literature.
·  Experiences in language through listening and models expression are built.
·  Children experience more complex language structures and story plot development in a rich context.
·  The teacher reads books to introduce and excite students about authors.
·  Oral reading can also be used to introduce or extend topics.
Independent Reading
·  Student reading / ·  Individual/and/or partners / ·  All printed material / ·  Reading pictures and memorized text are initial steps to the reading process.
·  Children choose their own reading materials and do their own reading.
·  Appreciation and enjoyment of reading are fostered.
