No.1 was at WLH, Hattingen for repairs, and WLH 53 had been on hire for about 6 weeks to cover for it.

Synthesegasanlage Ruhr GmbH., Oberhausen-Holtern
This company is owned 50/50 by Ruhrchemie and Hoechst, and is an experimental plant to synthesise fuel from coal. The plant is on part of the Hoechst, Werk Ruhrchemie site, and the 'robot' loco is used to shunt coal hoppers. However the use of coal proved uneconomic and the loco appears not be have been used for some time. It is now proposed to convert the works to oil fuel.

A line comes out of the back of the works, and runs eastwards for 1.7km to the sand pit. The loco runs about every 45min until about 1.30p.m.

This is the first loco here, as the company used a small shunting 'device' before. The company had less traffic then, but now send out the majority of the output by rail - about 7 wagons per day. The company generate 80% of their own electricity, using their own steam plant. This drives the generator with 4-cyl vertical Siemens steam engine.

A large number of narrow gauge locos are on the site here, but only the details of the following were noted, as these were the only ones that I photographed. The small Deutz was used to take us on a ride to the end of track, down in the valley. The Faust brothers have big plans to extend the line up the hill, through the woods, to the top end of the old sand pits.

Grenzach-Wyhlen
The large works on the north side of the DB line is much reduced and no longer has any rail connection. The Sodafabrik to the south of the village has closed and been demolished, but the line from the DB is still in place, and serves a Thyssen works built on part of the old site.

Fluß- und Schwerspatswerke Pforzheim GmbH., Würmtalstraße, Pforzheim-Würm
This company is a subsidiary of Bayer AG, and operates a mine inside the hill to the east of the road. The mine tunnel comes out near the road about 2km from the village, and road transport is then used to take the mineral away for processing. However the company are digging a new road access tunnel into the mine, and when this is finished the present rail tunnel will be disused. This should by the end of the year. The Ruhrtaler loco has a damaged engine, and is was not considered worth repairing it for the last few months work.
The company used to have several other mines in south Germany. Grube Finstergrund, near Todtnau, used to have a lot of locos, some of which went to a museum near Freiburg. There was also Grube Brenden, which worked c1955-1979 and Grube Gottesehere, near St.Blasien, 1952-87. There is a plan to turn Gottesehere into a museum mine, so most of the equipment has been left on site until it's future has been settled. I was told that there are 2 Deutz and 1 Ruhrtaler locos still there.

Nearly all rail operations here are handled by Eisenbahn & Hafen, who are owned 90/10% by Thyssen and Ruhrkohle. However Thyssen still own the two narrow gauge systems, used in the ingot and slab plants, and they also have four standard gauge locos, plus at least one 'robot'. Loco No.401 was seen at the workshops of E&H.
