The Shantou University / Chinese University of Hong Kong Joint Shantou International Eye Center is pleased to announce the 4thLi Ka Shing Foundation International Ophthalmic Research Student Forum for Friday 30thOctober 2015, Lecture Hall, 2/FJoint Shantou International Eye Center (JSIEC), Hong Kong. Masters or PhD students in any research areas in ophthalmology and visual sciences around the world are invited to submit an abstractin English between 200-250 words, deadline 15th July 2015. A total of 20 abstracts in visual sciences and 20 abstracts in ophthalmology will be selected by the Abstract Review Committeeof international experts convened by Prof Calvin Pang. The presenting author, who should be first author of the abstract, will give a 9 min PPT presentation, with 3 min questions and answer, at the forum. There will be awards for 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes in ophthalmology and in visual sciences, 1st prize of RBM2,000, 2nd Prize RBM1,500, and 3rd prize RBM1,000. The prizes will be decided by an international panel of assessors and by all the presenting authors. The awards will be bestowed in the Awards Ceremony on 1stNovember 2015.
All presenting authors will be awarded by a certificate and provided sponsorship of registration fee and hotel accommodation in shared room (28th October – 1st November 2015) to attend the 11th International Symposium of Ophthalmology 31stOctober – 1st November 2015 at the Regency Hotel, Shantou.

Text: / Purpose: Down-regulation of microRNA-145 (miR-145) leads to increased severity of pterygium. Up-regulation of miR-145 should attenuate pterygium growth.
Methods:Transfection of miR-145 in primary pterygium cells led to ectopic expression of miR-145. Apoptosis of miR-145-transfected pterygium cells was studied by flow cytometry. The expression of miR-145-related targets, mouse double minute 2 (MDM2) and p53, was determined by flow cytometry and immunoblotting.
Results:There was reduced viability of primary pterygium cells transfected with miR-145 in comparison with scramble control. The miR-145 transfected pterygium cells had higher proportion of sub-G1 phase than the scramble control (40.9% vs 7.32%, p < 0.05). Based on TargetScan prediction (Human V6.2), MDM2 is a potential predicted target gene of miR-145. This was confirmed by flow cytometry and immunoblotting analyses that MDM2 protein expression was reduced in miR-145-transfected pterygium cells, compared to the scramble control. In contrast, the expression of p53, which is negatively regulated by MDM2, was increased after miR-145 transfection.
Conclusion: This study showed that ectopic expression miR-145 lead to pterygium cell apoptosis. MDM2 was downregulated by miR-145, whereas p53 was upregulated. Overexpression of miR-145 in pterygium cells could be a potential therapeutic strategy for pterygium treatment through MDM2/p53-induced apoptotic pathway
