APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

Note: Please DO NOT submit any supplementary materials (e.g. appendices) as these will not be reviewed. Submit only the requested documents. We will acknowledge receipt of all electronic documents by email.

The application must be:

  • Typed using Arial 11 font with 1” margins all around, single spaced, and with adherence to the page limitations specified.
  • Searchable: It should be created using text or word-processing software and then converted to PDF. Scanned documents cannot be processed using Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and are therefore not searchable.
  • No larger than 4MB. Consider compressing images and/or eliminating color images before converting to a .pdf to minimize file size.
  • Submitted in a single .pdf and named “yourlastnameApp”
  • Failure to adhere to these formatting requirements will affect your review scoring.

Application Evaluation

Applications to the APPCI will be evaluated by the APPCI Advisory Committee based upon:

  • Quality of proposed mentorship, current extramural funding is required of the Primary Mentor.
  • Feasibility of proposed research project
  • Departmental support
  • Applicant’s commitment to pursue a career in clinical/translationalresearch

Application Format. Please submit your application according to the following outline:

I. Applicant Data

  1. Applicant Information Page (see page 3 of this document)
  2. Cover letter describing your career goals and why the APPCI will be important in achieving those goals.
  3. Current CV

II.Research Project

Brief description of proposed research project (3 page limit). Project should be one that you can complete within the 2 year timeframe of your training. Use following format:

  1. Title
  2. Proposed Primary Mentor and any additional mentors
  3. Brief background and significance of the project (1 paragraph)
  4. Hypothesis(es)
  5. Prior work performed related to this project (by applicant or mentor)
  6. Research Methodology (include data source[s])
  7. Analysis Methods
  8. Timeline for project (including IRB, subject enrollment, manuscript submissions, data analysis and grant submission)
  9. Anticipated funding source(s) for fully developed project

III.Mentorship

  1. Letter of Support from each proposed Mentor. Must include description of resources, estimate of time to commit to mentoring trainee’s research through the proposed research project, estimate of trainee's potential for success as academic researcher, and a statement of support for the applicant’s research project as proposed.
  2. Mentor(s)'s NIH Biosketch and Other Support Page

IV. Department/Division Support

  1. Letter of Support from Division Chief (if applicable), to include evaluation of applicant and mentor(s) as to their potential for success with the proposed research program and overall development.
  2. Letter of Support from Department Chair including:
  3. Verification of salary support for the duration of the 2 year program
  4. A guarantee of at least 20 hours per weekdedicated time for 2years to pursue APPCI didactic coursework and research
  5. An evaluation of applicant as to their potential for success with the proposed research program and overall development toward a career in clinical research
  6. Affirmation that the pursuit of research is of value to the applicant’s department and is recognized as an integral part of the candidate’s career. For individuals in a fellowship position, please verify that this candidate has a post-fellowship faculty position commitment from the department.
