EAS230 Introduction to Clickers and their Usage Spring2006

Prepared by B.Ramamurthy

We are planning to use Quizdom Interactive system to support active participation of the students in the class and to evaluate the level of understanding of the material taught in the course during lectures and in the labs. Each student can use their personal clicker for this purpose. See note[1] at the end of this document if you do not have one, cannot afford one or have forgotten to bring it to class. Please strictly follow the instructions given below since this is the first time we are trying it out in this class. We will start with some simple activities today and move on larger ones as we get familiarized with the set up.

Goal of this first session is to take care of any problems with personal ids, and any technical difficulties we may encounter with the system set up and the remotes. Topic for this session is to review the fundamentals we covered in the last weeks.

DO NOT ENTER ANY UNWANTED INFORMATION or MISUSE YOUR REMOTE BY PRESSING IT WILDLY. This may disable you from participation. We will come around and help you if you have problems.

  1. Please collect a sheet of colored paper that the TA is passing around. This is a worksheet and for writing any notes and feedback comments. Please write your name and person number at the top of this sheet.
  2. Before coming to every class make sure your clicker has enough power.
  3. Let us examine the parts of the clicker you will use. This is a Q4 clicker. For the first class do not use any other type of clicker. See the attached sheet for details of the buttons: Menu/power, Send, Left/Right scrolls, Clear, {A,B,C,D,E, and F} choices, T/F and Yes/No choices, and the numerical buttons for number answers.
  4. You will power on by pressing Menu, scroll to User ID and enter user id and send; then enter session id and send. We will tell you the session id.
  5. We will now start displaying the activity for this session which consists of different types of slides: informational, multiple choice questions, True/False, Yes/No, multiple marks (more than one answer may be selected). We will discuss the content of the slide to review the material and then make an informed selection.
  6. When you are ready to answer observe that you remote will display the choices you have. Press the button corresponding to your answer, (you may change it before sending), and then send. Only one answer per remote per question is allowed by the system.
  7. The system maintains score for each student. More important than the raw score is the effective review of the content and the wider participation made possible by this system.
  8. Write you feedback on the paper provided and turn it in.
  9. Take out your clickers and let us have some fun.

[1] If you do not posses a clicker write your answers on the sheet of paper provided and turn it in. Make sure you have your name and person number on the sheet of paper.
