RAMS Engineer April 2017 – Present
Supporting the development of a novel active rail crossing solution for installation in low traffic rural and regional area. Provided support in the development of the PHA, SIL Determination, System Hazard Analysis (including FTA). Supported the safety program through the ISA process.
Requirements Management Support Dec 2016 – Mar 2017
Supporting Siemens in the configuration and initial population of the requirements database for a major rail signalling project to be undertaken as part of a large rail infrastructure upgrade on the Victorian Metropolitan Network. Activities include establishing the database in DOORS, population of data and establishing the traceability of customer and derived requirements.
Safety Assurance Engineer Nov 2016 – Dec 2016
Supported a major train manufacturer in articulating the preliminary safety arguments in GSN for a new train set to be introduced into the Victorian Metropolitan Network. Arguments were developed for 11 individual safety cases supporting the entire train program (design through to maintenance). Interfaced with the state reviewer to incorporate their comments as required.
AMOG Consulting, Senior Safety Engineer Jan 2011 - Nov 2016
Train Set Upgrade - Managed the SIL verification activity of a safety function, as part of the upgrades for a train set for use on a major metropolitan rail network. Undertook verification activities related to hardware aspects, and interfaced with the software assessor for full EN 5012X program. Reviewed the subcontractor interface to the main safety program.
Rail Project ISA – Provided initial support to the Independent Safety Assessor on a trainset to be introduced into service on a major metropolitan rail network.
Rail Tunnel Project – Provided support to the PHA and SIL Allocation studies related to subsystems for a new rail tunnel. Provided input into the development of the preliminary fault trees for the Safety Functions.
Public Transport Safety Case – Provided support to the scoping study to produce a state safety case for public transportation operations for a state public transport department.
Safety Program – Remote Isolation System – Undertook PHA and SIL Allocation on a remote isolation system. Assisted the review of the organisation’s safety engineering processes.
Career History (continued)
Safety Case Template for a Military Update Program – Assisted in the development of a Safety Case Template for an upgrade program, including the preparation of a preliminary GSN of the safety argument.
Road Tunnel RAMS Program – Prepared the RAMS Plan for a Control System for two new road tunnels in NSW. Provided support in the development RAM models for tunnel systems.
Military Safety Program – Lead the Systems Safety Team for a national defence organisation project. Wrote an SSPP to MIL-STD 882E, undertook PHA, prepared reports, the hazard log and represented the Safety Program at formal Design Review.
Offshore RAM Project – Undertook a RAM analysis on a subsystem for Floating Production Unit. Conducted FMECA workshops, developed RAM models in industry standard software and provided recommendations on sparing.
Mining Machine OEM Safety Support – Hardware SIL and CAT verification activities on surface and underground mining machines. Examined reliability and maintenance issues on an underground mining machine including design compliance, FMECA and maintenance. Undertook a compliance assessment underground mining machines with relevant design guides for isolation systems, including remote isolation.
Military System Program Office (SPO) Safety Support – Assisted a SPO with meeting their WHS obligations on a large number of categories of legacy equipment used by a national defence organisation. Undertook risk assessments, managed a safety team and was responsible for quality/technical assurance. Program included large numbers of items of equipment, populating hazard logs, and produced procedures and training. Provided ongoing systems safety support to the SPO in support of acquisition and introduction into service of new equipment.
Major Hazard Facility Assessor - Independently assessed a number of Major Hazard Facilities on behalf of the regulator for license renewal. Reviewed Hazard Identification/ Formal Safety Assessment, Safety Management Systems, Emergency Planning, and made recommendations on license conditions.
Offshore Refurbishment Campaign Safety Support – Conducted the preliminary HSSE Risk Assessment for the proposed refurbishment of a floating, offshore facility. Assessment included consideration of port, offshore and diving operations. Subsequently, undertook an evaluation of the proposed operations for impacts on the facility safety case and accident events, including if planned operations would require an updated safety case.
Accommodation Vessel Safety Case – Undertook the initial gap analysis to translate the existing foreign offshore safety case for an accommodation vessel, into an Australian safety case. Included the complete review of the existing Safety Case and existing safety studies, and a detailed comparison of International and Australian offshore safety case legislation.
Motion Monitoring System Development – Designed, installed and operated a dynamic vibration monitoring system for an offshore structure. Undertook complete system design including requirements, architecture, component selection, integration and commissioning.
Senior CAE Engineer, Synergetics Environmental EngineeringMar 2008 – Dec 2010
Road Tunnel Portal Emissions – Managed a project seeking planning approval for night time tunnel portal emissions from an Australian road tunnel. Consisted of a comprehensive human health risk assessment requiring a long-term, in-tunnel monitoring campaign, detailed numerical modelling of portal emissions using CFD and development of a novel exposure re-construction model and an evaluation of human health risk. Program produced a detailed fan run plan to adjust portal emission rate to reduce the risk to acceptable levels, and a concept for a portal emission management system.
Rapid Risk Ranking of Emission Sources – Study Leader and Dispersion Modelling SME for the risk ranking of all emission sources from the Boyne Smelters Ltd (BSL) aluminium smelter. The study was part of an environmental investigation of the facility using a client risk ranking technique. Developed a ISO 31000 based methodology to apply to site emission sources, developed workbooks, risk categories, risk matrix and ran workshops to produce a semi-quantitative risk assessment methodology. The study was accepted by the regulator and contributed to the successful completion of the investigation.
