Kaliningrad 2010 Oct. 25th-Oct. 30th, 2010
Model European Parliament
Baltic Sea Region
Kaliningrad 2010
Dear MEP BSR Kaliningrad delegates, teachers/directors/organizers and guests,
We come together here in Kaliningrad, Russia, this week to discuss current political issues reaching across frontiers and cultural differences. Issues which influence us all to a greater extent than most are aware of. We all know that cross-border co-operation is essential if we want to meet the challenges of a globalized world. With this in mind, time for reflecting, discussing, and understanding each other is vital. It is indispensable to spend time and energy in listening to one another in order to encourage further collaboration between countries in the European Union, and not least between the countries of the Baltic Sea region.
Currently we are facing many challenges which should be dealt with by regional co-operation. First of which comes to mind, is the environmental challenges of our planet. There is an urgent need to address the conservation of our local environment. The subject will be covered in this parliamentary session by The Committee on Power Engineering and Environment of the Baltic Sea.
Another important issue concerns multicultural education. In order to allow for youngsters to study in other countries and thereby enhance our mutual understanding, our educational systems should be reviewed. The Committee on Education and Culture will address the possibility of aligning the educational systems and thereby furthering dialogue of cultures.
In continuation of discussing intercultural education The Committee on Regional Development will attend to the question of establishing a visa-free regime for the Baltic Sea region. Addressing this issue could, amongst other things, contribute to better cultural and scientific relations and improve trade and economics between the countries in the region.
Many economies in Europe are based largely on the agricultural sector, for this reason co-operation on this subject is necessary. The Committee on Agriculture and Agro-industrial Complex Development will deal with questions concerning the development of rural areas, agricultural economics and agro-tourism.
A significant development has taken place in the last decades and media is playing an increasingly important role in politics and life today. This is why The Committee on the Role of New Media will discuss the challenges of major media influence in a democratic society and the increasing use of social media and its potential pitfalls.
In conclusion, it is obvious that you are here to discuss important issues of today’s modern world. You are here to learn from each other, to exchange ideas that are vital for the future of Europe. I strongly urge you all to take this unique opportunity to express and develop your ideas in co-operation with other young students from Europe. Last but not least, I urge you to enjoy this week to the full; it will pass more quickly than you think.
Welcome to The Model European Parliament Baltic Sea Region 2010 in Kaliningrad!
Sincerely,
Petra Buer Gram
President of the General Assembly
