Undergraduate Student Poster Session

The Undergraduate Student Poster Session will be held on Friday, November 4th, from

10:00 AM to 12:00. We will be on hand earlier to help you put your posters up.

Submitting a poster to the TPA Convention is a great way to advance your career! You will be able to show your work to psychologists throughout the state. These new contacts may be great sources of information about jobs in TN and graduate programs. In addition, if you have one of the top three undergraduate posters, you win a monetary award!

How to Make a Poster Submission

Requirements:

Please note that you must register for the convention itself in order to present a poster. It is acceptable to register after you know whether your poster has been accepted, and you may register only for the day you present your poster. However, we urge you to attend all of the convention.

The research presented must be original (not previously published/presented or under consideration for another conference) and you must be first author of the work (i.e., not your major professor). To submit a poster, you must be an undergraduate at the time the talk is to be presented.

How do I choose a topic?

We value submissions from every area of psychology. Thus, poster topics could include physiological studies, I/O research, measurement issues, and classic clinical research. Quantitative reviews (meta-analysis) can be submitted.

How should you format your poster?

This year our procedures have changed, so please read carefully. You will submit your entire poster for review electronically before the convention, rather than submitting just an abstract. At the top of the poster you will put the title & list of authors (in order of contribution) and their highest degrees. Below the list of authors list their affiliations, using numbers to indicate which author is at which institution. You should then have these sections: Abstract, Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, & References. You could include a table or figure. A poster that omits one of the required sections will not be considered. Your overall length will be limited by the size of the poster board.

Posters should be written in a Microsoft Word file or ppt & formatted according to the most recent APA Publication Manual. Save your poster as “1st author’s name undergrad poster 1.” If you submit 2 or more posters, just change the number at the end. For example: “Leslie Robinson undergrad poster 2.

What’s the deadline for submission? 5:00 pm, central time, 10/10/2016. No late submissions, please!

Where should I submit my poster? Email your poster with the completed Undergraduate Student Poster Form by the deadline to Dr. Nicky Ozbek. If you have questions, you may contact her at:

Nicky Ozbek, Ph.D.

How will posters be evaluated?

Your poster will be independently reviewed by 3 psychologists. Each psychologist will rate every submission, using 4-point scales to evaluate the significance of the work, its innovation, research methods, and the interpretation of findings. These ratings will be then averaged.

When will I know whether my poster has been accepted by the convention?

On 10/21/2015 you will receive an email telling you whether your poster submission has been accepted for the convention. You will then have about 2 weeks to have your poster printed and assembled. We have room for a total of 20 posters.

When will I know if I have won an award for my research?

The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners will be announced immediately following your poster presentation at the noon TPA Business Meeting and Luncheon. It is critical that you register for this lunch so that you will be there in case you win!

How should I construct my poster?

If your poster is accepted, you should print the poster, using large enough font that it can be read from a distance of 3 feet. You will also need a sturdy backing board on which to display it. We suggest you glue the printed poster to the backboard carefully. You may also use a professional printer if you like. Dimensions should be approximately 3 feet high x 4 feet wide. If you have any questions, talk with your mentor or contact Dr. Ozbek.

We will supply tripods on which to display your poster. We strongly suggest that you test whether your board is strong enough to stay upright on a tripod before you come to the convention!

As student authors, you must be available to answer questions about your research throughout the poster session. Arrive at least 15 minutes early to set up your poster. Then enjoy the attention!

NOTE: If you need financial help for the convention, please let Dr. Ozbek know. We have some limited opportunities for convention jobs that will lessen student costs.
