QUARTER 1

Week 1: September 8-10 (3 days)

Topic/Theme: At school, Identifying people, Greetings and Introductions, Expectations and Routines

Benchmarks/Outcomes: S.1.2.Demonstrate comprehension of words that express basic personal needs (such as transportation, housing); personal likes and dislikes; personal information (such as age, address, family); and school-related information (such as teacher’s name, schedule, routines). (link to FL2), S.2.1.Demonstrate comprehension of everyday expressions used in interpersonal interactions (such as “Hi, how are you?,” “See you later”). (link to FL 2)

Content and Language Objectives: Outline classroom expectations and routines; Introduce selves and peers; Identify important parts of the school.

Grammar: Capitalization and periods, Verb To be: “I am…”, “She/He is …”, “I like…”, “I don’t like…”

Activities: Develop class rules through groupwork using poster paper; About me poster: name, favorite hobby, favorite subject, favorite sport and nationality; Alphabetizing project

Week 2: September 13-17

Topic/Theme: In the classroom; Classmates; Around the School

Benchmarks/Outcomes: S.1.3.Demonstrate comprehension of vocabulary essential for grade-level content learning, using pictures, actions, and/or objects. (link to FL 7), R.2.5.Use letter-sound knowledge to decode written English. (link to ELA 7.7)

Content and Language Objectives: Identify and spell classroom objects; Describe our classroom using “There is/are…”; Interview classmates and respond to question about their phone numbers; Tell time.

Grammar: Verb To be, classroom objects with articles: a, an, the, plurals (s, es, ies), “There is/are…”, “It is …(o’clock)”.

Activities: Crossword puzzle with numbers; Interview classmates for phone numbers; Tell time with a clock and open pairs

Week 3: September 20-24

Topic/Theme: A Day at School, In the School Office

Benchmarks/Outcomes: S.1.1.Demonstrate comprehension of everyday words and phrases, using

pictures, actions, and/or objects. (link to FL 2), S.2.13. Describe people, places, and things, using some detail. (link to FL 3.4), R.1.1.Read and understand previously learned essential vocabulary words. (link to FL 2; ELA 7.4), R.2.2.Recognize that printed text has specific form and carries meaning. (link to ELA 7.1)

Content and Language Objectives: Give information in the school office, greet people, request help, days and months, dates, ordinal numbers.

Grammar: Nouns, Pronouns, simple present of be, possessive adjectives, capitalization and punctuation, short vowels a,e,i,o,u.

Activities: Make a class calendar, create an ideal schedule, write a journal entry about a family member.

Week 4: September 27- October 1

Topic/Theme: Information Forms and Solving Word Problems

Benchmarks/Outcomes: S.1.10. Express basic personal needs and information (such as health, food, clothing, weather, recreation) and school-related information, using spoken words and phrases. Classify previously learned words by content themes or topics (such as Gr. 3–5 science plant structures: roots, leaves, stem, bark; Gr. 9–12 math patterns: iterative, linear, recursive; Gr. 6–8 history/social science geography terms: region, tropics, rain forest, tundra). Content and Language Objectives: Discuss information about you, convey emergency information, talk about math words and operations, read multi-syllable math words.

Grammar: Nouns, pronouns, simple present be, punctuation and capitalization, declarative and interrogative sentences, commas in dates and addresses.

Activities: Create word problems, fill in application forms for a library card (field trip to the library)

Topic/Theme: About My Family

(link to ELA 23.2), W.1.2.Identify the structure and length that support the audience, purpose, and topic of a writing task., W.1.3.Write lists of words and phrases needed to accomplish an assigned writing task., W.4.1.Use knowledge of correct mechanics when editing. Week 6: October 12-15 (Columbus Day)

Topic/Theme: Two Family Poems, Classifying Animals

Compare and contrast information orally., R.2.1.Demonstrate readiness for reading in English., W.2.1.Write an account based on personal experience that has a focus and supporting detail. Content and Language Objectives: Discuss family words, family members, poetry structure (rhyme, stanzas) identify the main idea and details, read aloud with intonation and expression.

Grammar: Regular plurals, irregular plurals, contractions and negatives with be, simple present tense.

Activities: Students write a poem, students write a descriptive paragraph, make an animal classification poster, organize rhyme cards.

Topic/Theme: Midterm; After-school activities

Activities: Students make an activities collage, identify after-school activities in the community.

Week 8: October 25-29

Topic/Theme: After-school Activities

Benchmarks/Outcomes:S.2.13. Describe people, places, and things, using some detail. (link to ELA 19.13), W.2.14.Write a letter, using appropriate form and degree of formality for its intended audience. (link to ELA 19.18)

Content and Language Objectives: Talk about after-school activities, state likes and dislikes, ask and answer questions about activities, use adverbs of frequency, tell time, write a friendly letter.

Grammar: Simple past tense, time words, long e sound: ee, ea, simple past of verbs ending

in consonant +y.

Activities: Write a friendly letter, create an after-school activities schedule.
