A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE GERRY SUE AND NORMAN J. ARNOLD OF RICHLAND COUNTY, UPON THE OCCASION OF THEIR GOLDEN WEDDING ANNIVERSARY, AND TO EXTEND BEST WISHES FOR MANY MORE YEARS OF BLESSING AND FULFILLMENT.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are pleased to learn that Gerry Sue and Norman J. Arnold celebrated a half century of marriage to one another on January 13, 2013; and

Whereas, born in 1929, Norman Arnold spent his early years in Charleston before the Arnold family moved to Columbia. He attended Oglethorpe University outside Atlanta, Georgia, where he later served as a trustee for 20 years; and

Whereas, upon graduation in 1952, he returned to Columbia to join the Ben Arnold Company, founded by his grandfather Isaac Ginsberg in 1907; he has only left the family business for the four years he served his country with distinction as a naval officer in the Pacific during the Korean conflict; and

Whereas, the couple met in Atlanta where Gerry Sue was born and raised, and there in 1963, in the month of January when camellias send their fragrant pink blooms abroad, Gerry Sue and Norman pledged to one another a lifetime of love and sharing as they were joined in holy matrimony; and

Whereas, in 1963 Mr. Arnold became president and CEO of the family business, and under his leadership the company experienced continuous and substantial growth and recognition as a top privately owned business in South Carolina and as a model South Carolina company; and

Whereas, Mr. Arnold, with the love and support, of Mrs. Arnold, has been selfless in his service to the public. Among his countless contributions he was a founder and past president of the Boy’s Club of Columbia and of the Columbia Zoological Park; he served on the Providence Hospital Board of Trustees, the Oversight Board of the Medical University of South Carolina, and the State Development Board. He was Director of the Wine and Spirits Wholesalers of America for 28 years. In 1998 he was appointed to the United States Department of Commerce, United States-Israel Science and Technology Commission, and currently he is on the National Board of Trustees of the American Jewish Historical Society; and

Whereas, among his myriad honors and awards for outstanding service and extensive contributions, he was a recipient of the Time Magazine Distinguished Community Service award; and

Whereas, Mr. and Mrs. Arnold have generously supported public health causes to improve the lives of South Carolinians, and in 2000, they donated $10 million to the University of South Carolina to benefit the School of Public Health, which now bears the family’s name; and

Whereas, they reside in Columbia where together they reared three fine sons: Ben Daniel, Michael, and David and where Gerry Sue has been an anchor and a beacon for the family and a devoted, encouraging wife contributing in untold ways; and

Whereas, no success on earth crowns a life as does a marriage that endures the test of time and grows stronger with each passing year; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are grateful for the contributions that Gerry Sue and Norman Arnold have made to their community, to the Palmetto State, and to the country and celebrate with them in the joy of their fiftieth wedding anniversary. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, congratulate Gerry Sue and Norman J. Arnold of Richland County upon the occasion of their golden wedding anniversary, and extend best wishes for many more years of blessing and fulfillment.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to Gerry Sue and Norman J. Arnold.
