Developing Fuel Quality Roadmaps in Asia
22-23 May 2006
Auditorium A & B, Asian Development Bank
Background
The Clean Air Initiative for Asian Cities (CAI-Asia) and representatives from the Oil Industry had agreed to conduct a dialogue to contribute towards the improvement of urban air quality in Asia in July 2003 in Singapore. This agreement was concretized in the “Singapore Statement” as agreed by both parties. As an input to the Dialogue process, CAI-Asia and international experts have developed a document which can guide decision-makers and other stakeholders in establishing the use of cleaner fuels in Asia.
This workshop will gather representatives from the oil industry, vehicle manufacturers, Asian governments, and development institutions to discuss how Asian countries should move forward in developing their fuel quality roadmaps.
The study will also be an input into the first Governmental Meeting on Urban Air Quality, which CAI-Asia will co-host with United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), United Nations Centre for Regional Development (UNCRD) and the Ministry of Environment in Indonesia in September 2006.

Climate Change Mitigation in the Transport Sector
24-25 May 2006
Auditorium A & B, Asian Development Bank
Background
Transport is currently the largest contributor to greenhouse gasses in Asia and is the fastest growing sector in terms of contributions. Yet, relatively limited attention has been given so far to the formulation of dedicated policies to reduce the growth in greenhouse gas emissions from the transport sector in Asia. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) in cooperation with the Clean Air Initiative for Asian Cities (CAI-Asia), with support from the Government of the United Kingdom, through the Department for International Development (DFID) have initiated a study with the aim to contribute towards the development of an overall investment framework on climate change under the Group of Eight (G8) Gleneagles’ Action Plan on Climate Change, Clean Energy and Sustainable Development which was agreed upon in July 2005. In addition the study will also be an input into the first Governmental Meeting on Urban Air Quality, which CAI-Asia will co-host with United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), United Nations Centre for Regional Development (UNCRD) and the Ministry of Environment in Indonesia in September 2006.
This workshop will present the working paper on promoting energy efficiency in the transport sector and solicit comments and recommendations from the participants.
