Part II: Shark Tank

Group #______Group Members

______

______

Background: The colonies of Jamestown and Plymouth got off to a rocky start. Both colonies were not well prepared for the various obstacles they would face. Their expeditions could well have been a total failure without the help of Native Americans.

Task: Research what information (maps, knowledge of North America) and materials were available in 1620. Then, based on your findings, plan an expedition to set up an English colony in North America (somewhere between Maine and South Carolina). In order to pay for your expedition you will need investors. You will be presenting your plan to a group of investors (the shark tank) that you will try to convince to finance (pay for) your expedition. You must persuade them that your attempt to colonize will be successful and profitable.

Procedure: Choose a group leader who will lead the discussion and create and share the Google Docs file with the group.

Step 1: Brainstorming: Begin by thinking about the purpose of your colony. All group members must participate and record the answers to the questions below.

1.  Why do you want to set up a colony in the New World? Are your goals financial, political, religious, a mixture of these, or something completely different? ______

2.  Choose a destination that is a good match for your mission. You should base your choice on maps and reports from previous explorers. Consider the geography and climate of the area. Please provide the exact location. All group members must participate.

Destination______Exact Location______

3.  How will you pay investors back and make the colony profitable? This will depend on the location of the colony. Look at the resources available in the location you have chosen (maps on pages 103, 111, and 115)? ______

4.  How will the colony be ruled? Will the investors rule the colony or have representation in the government? Will the colonists have a say in how the colony is ruled? ______

5.  What type of relationship would you like to have with the local natives? How will you accomplish this? ______

6.  How many colonists and ships will you take on your first voyage? Will it include women and children? ______

7.  Approximately when are you planning to leave England and set sail for the New World? How long do you expect the voyage to take? ______

Step 2 Plan your presentation. Your group must create a PowerPoint presentation using Google Docs. Decide as a group how you will present this information to the class. What can you add to your presentation to make it stand out? The more organized, attractive, informative, and creative the presentation is, the more likely you will be to get our colony funded (and get a better grade) by the “shark tank.” Your group leader will create the document and share the file with all group members and Mrs. Napolitano (). You must name the document as follows: period#group#VTA. This will allow all group members to work on the document in school and at home.

Step 3 Divide the tasks listed below. Each member will need to research what information (maps, knowledge of North America) and materials were available in 1620. Use the project links on my website, and/or your notes, textbook, and class work to find this information. (http://www.mahopac.k12.ny.us/mms/teachers/napolitanol)

All members of the group must work on the following:

Write a Mission Statement: This must be the first slide in your presentation. It should be one paragraph about who you are and why you want to colonize in the New World.

Each member of the group will be responsible for one of the following:

Create a timeline. Your timeline should include the following:

·  When will you leave England?

·  How long will the journey take? When are you planning to arrive?

·  Do you have additional groups taking later voyages?

·  Will there be a social or political structure set up (government, owners of a joint stock company, religious leaders, governor, council, etc.)? Will this be set up before or after you arrive? How long will it take to be set up? When will they have their first meeting?

·  Homes built? Crops planted? Fort?

·  How long will it take to pay back your investors?

·  How long (projected time) will it take for your colony to be successful (well established, with at least 1000 colonists)? This should include all of the things that your colony will need to be established and the time it will take for each.

Member responsible for timeline ______

Create a personnel chart Your Personnel Chart should include three columns, one for each of the following:

·  What type of personnel ( different occupations) you will need and why?

·  How many of each will you need?

·  What will they be responsible for in the colony?

Member responsible for the personnel chart ______

Create a supply chart. Your supply chart should include three columns, one for each of the following:

·  What supplies you will need in order for your colonists to survive the voyage?

·  What will they need when they first arrive and what supplies that you will need to set up the colony? Try to think of every detail. Include specific examples.

·  Include the amount of each item. State the reasons why you will need these supplies.

v  You don’t have to include personal items that people would bring for themselves, like their clothing.

Member responsible for the supply chart ______

Create maps of the area you intend to colonize: Your maps would have been based on information gathered by previous explorers like Captain John Smith. Your maps can be drawn on the Smartboard and saved, drawn by hand and scanned, or drawn using another program on the computer. They must then be imported into the presentation. You may draw or include more than two maps. If the map is hard to label, create a key.

·  Include a map of the location of the colony on the east coast of North America. Think about what type of information you would want to include. What is the colony near? What resources does the location have? You will need to justify the groups choice.

·  Draw a local map of the area including geographic features based on the exact location that your team has chosen. The map should also include where your settlement will be built including all of the settlements features (ex. homes, meeting house, fort, farmland, etc.). The more details you include the better your map will be.

·  Things to consider: water supply, water power, deep water port, fertile workable land, supply of lumber, physical features, local natives, etc.

Member responsible for the maps ______

Step 4 Regroup and collaborate. Group members should compare information. Make sure the timeline, supply chart, and personnel chart, and maps make sense together. You don’t want to contradict one another.

Step 5 Plan and practice your presentation. How will you persuade the “shark tank” that they should pay for your voyage? The group leader is responsible for introducing the group and presenting the mission statement. Each member must in turn present the part of the project they were responsible for.

Remember: All group members share responsibility for the final project. Each group member takes personal responsibility for contributing his or her efforts to accomplish the group’s goals and helping other group members do likewise.
