part-time position/non-exempt

position purpose: The stage manager is a key member of the Artistic Operations team. Together with the orchestra manager and director of community programs and the operations and community programs coordinator, the stage manager will oversee and implement all stage setup and logistics for LACO services, ensuring the smooth and safe operation of all rehearsals and concerts in a timely and professional manner. The stage manager works closely venue house crews, musicians, operations and community programs coordinator, personnel manager, orchestra manager and director of community programs, librarian, music director, guest conductors, and soloists.

scope & responsibilities

Stage and Backstage:

·  Ensure stage and backstage areas are prepared for rehearsal and performance at least one hour before service start and at least thirty minutes before the front of house is opened to the public.

·  Ensure that all stage requirements specified by conductors, artists and the LACO Master Agreement are met.

·  Stage mange all services including main orchestral series, baroque series, run-outs, tours, chamber music services, education concerts and activities as needed.

·  Coordinate with local stage crews to ensure appropriate work duties are assigned and smooth workflow is maintained during all LACO services.

·  Coordinate and schedule with operations & community programs coordinator, rental and transportation agencies and local crew to ensure timely and accurate delivery and pickup of all necessary instruments and equipment.

·  As stage manager,in coordination with personnel manager, operations & community programs coordinator and house staff, call all production and show-related cues, and communicate all show-related information such as timing sheets, audience late seating breaks, intermission lengths, etc.

·  Load out stage setup and related equipment, as necessary, in a timely, effective, and efficient manner, in coordination with the local crew, following every service.

·  Make stage calls for conductor, soloist and as necessary.

·  Assist operations artistic departments with auditions, community events and other activities as scheduled.

Administrative:

·  Hire assistant stage personnel for LACO services when necessary, as approved by operations & community programs coordinator.

·  Attend all required production meetings for every orchestral concert set, as scheduled by operations & community programs coordinator.

·  In consultation with conductors and operations & community programs coordinator, prepare stage plots for orchestral services using industry standard programs.

·  Work with operations & community programs coordinator tocompile, create and distribute schedules, information and concert timelines for stage crew and operations artistic staff.

·  Address any musician requests for change of staging, in consultation with personnel manager and operations & community programs coordinator

·  Maintain and monitor a LACO email address to ensure timely and professional internal and external correspondence.

·  Work with operations & community programs coordinator to document stage set-ups, production notes and information for archives.

·  Serve as the primary point of contact for all technical, audiovisual and multimedia production information. Prepare quotes for special projects and productions.

·  Other production duties as assigned.

characteristics required

Position requires at least 5 years of professional experience in stage management and/or orchestra operations with a similar institution, and thorough knowledge of orchestral rehearsal and concert procedures. Bachelor’s degree preferred but not required. Experience working with union contracts, rules and regulations. Must have technical knowledge of performance venues, audio, video and multi-media platforms. Stage manager must be able to lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Stage manager must exhibit a respectful, professional, and amenable attitude, have the ability to work in a fast-paced environment, and exhibit excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Must understand the needs of a professional musician and be a creative problem solver who represents the interests of LACO in a variety of services and programs.
