Multiple awards of £300 – £1,000
Applications are invited for grants from the Ethicon Foundation Fund.
The fund was established by the generosity of Ethicon for the purpose of promoting international goodwill in ophthalmology by providing financial assistance to Fellows, Members or Affiliate Members of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists who are travelling abroad for research or training. Awards of up to £1,000 will be made at the discretion of the Committee.
Applications are adjudicated upon by the Ethicon Foundation Fund Committee. The Committee favours applications which demonstrate that applicants are using their initiative to obtain clinical experience above and beyond that which they would derive from a routine exchange or secondment to an overseas centre. A judgement will be made by the Committee which will take into account content of projects, support from the department and presentation. The award will support senior trainees towards the end of their training who have already gained some relevant experience in the UK and newly-appointed consultants (within five years). Truly outstanding project submitted by junior trainees might also be considered.
On occasions grants may be made to senior applicants who may be visiting an overseas centre to teach and/or learn new techniques. The Committee does not, in general, favour grants to enable an applicant to attend a meeting or conference overseas; neither does it favour grants to support the travel and subsistence of an applicant’s family.
Retrospective applications will not be considered.
Applications will only be considered from those who are Fellows, Members or Affiliate Members of the College who have passed the Refraction Certificate and FRCOphth Part 1.
As a condition of the award, successful candidates will be required to submit a report within three months of their return from their visit. Reports will be published on the College website unless successful candidates request in advance to opt out.
Please note that you must seek prospective GMC approval via your Deanery if you wish any of the time arising from the fellowship to count towards your CCT.
