LawtonFFA Wins State FFA Food Science Career Development Event

STILLWATER, Okla. — Members of the Lawton FFA Chapter won first-place in the State FFA Food Science and Technology Career Development Event during the 2018State FFA Career Development Events at Oklahoma State University April 28.

Team members includeElizabeth Kopsky, Colby Gilpen, Dean Lester and Connor Mabry.Kopsky earned high-point individual honors, while Gilpen and Lester received third- and fourth-place individual honors, respectively.

The team will represent Oklahoma in theFood Science and TechnologyCareer Development Event at the National FFA Convention in October.

Lawton’s agricultural education instructors and FFA advisers areChristopher Conway, Lindsey Hoerbert, Courtney Miller and Pete Dempsey.

The purpose of the contest is to stimulate learning activities in food science and technology related to the food industry and to assist students in developing a good working knowledge of sound principles used in a team decision-making process.

The OSU College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources hosted the contest. The Chickasaw Nation will provide a cash award to the team for expenses related to attending the national contest. Nelson and Helen Taylor will provide a $1,000 scholarship to the high individual.

FFA is an integral part of the Agricultural Education division in the Oklahoma Department of Career and Technology Education system.
