Description: This is a comprehensive course designed to guide you through a variety of information on preparing for independent life. It is a foundational course for Family and Consumer Sciences, Health Sciences, and Human Sciences and Education. Students will explore their personal growth potential, explore career choices, and think about their role as citizens.

Student Objectives for the Course:

· Integrate multiple life roles and responsibilities for family ,work and community settings;

· Evaluate management practices related to human, economic and environmental resources;

· Integrate knowledge, skills and practices required for careers in early childhood, education, family and community services, food production services, textiles, apparel and consumer services;

· Integrate knowledge, skills and practices required for careers in facility management and resources;

· Evaluate the significance of the family and its effect on the wellbeing of individuals and society;

· Demonstrate respectful and caring relationships in the family, workplace and community;

· Demonstrate nutrition and wellness practices that enhance individual and family wellbeing;

· Evaluate parenting roles and responsibilities.

Assessments and projects will account for 70% of your cumulative grade with daily work accounting for 30%.

Class Attendance/Make Up Work:

The attendance policy will be followed as stated in the student handbook. As with all classes, attendance is very important and imperative for good grades. It is YOUR responsibility to get make up assignments and turn in makeup work upon return. LATE WORK IS SUBJECT TO POINT DEDUCTIONS AT THE DISCRETION OF THE CLASSROOM TEACHER. NO MISSING WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED FOR GRADING AFTER THE END OF EACH QUARTER. You can expect a letter grade deduction for each day a missing assignment has not been turned in.

RETAKE POLICY

The HSE/FACS retake policy for this course is:

1) Retakes will be allowed for failed assessments or to improve grade on assessment after communication with the instructor;

2) Retakes will be allowed ONCE per assessment;

3) NO retakes on daily work will be allowed;

4) Retakes on assessments must be completed within the quarter they were originally administered.

CLASSROOM RULES AND EXPECTATIONS:

Rules and disciplinary procedures will be followed as stated in the student handbook. Additional expectations for the classroom include but are not limited to:

1) No food or drink (water is allowed) unless teacher approval has been given.

2) Textbooks, notebooks and writing utensils are required each day (There are a limited number of extra texts and teachers will not hand out paper and pencils).

3) Be punctual and come prepared to learn. Be productive and maximize learning time by staying on task.

Personal Electronic Devices (PED) Policy:

This classroom, as with all classrooms, is designated as a Yellow Zone. PED use will be regulated based on the curriculum and instructional strategies for the day. Expectations will be communicated clearly as well as the consequences for infractions. Consequences will include confiscation of the device with repeated violators being referred to the campus security and the administration for willful insubordination. Please see the handbook for more detailed information on the policy.
