Palm Sunday
Mk 11:1-10 or Jn 12:12-16 (37) Is 50:4-7/Phil 2:6-11, Mk 14:1, 15:1-39 (38)
“Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread reeds which they had cut in the fields. Those preceding him as well as those who followed cried out: ‘Hosannah! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed be the reign of our father David to come! God save him from on high.’”
Living God’s word today allows us to reflect upon ‘the palm in your palm.’ The cut branch, now blessed and held, asks us to look in two directions, as did the people in Jerusalem the day of Jesus’ entry to the holy city. They looked to the teaching of the prophets and the hopes for the coming Messiah. The reign of God had now begun. At the same time, they looked forward to what that kingdom would mean, and with the passion, what it would cost.
As I hold the blessed palm, I too cry out ‘Hosannah, save us now’, as we are in dire need of the saving power of Jesus’ passion, death and resurrection. It will come only if we seek it. It will happen beginning with this holy week, as I enter more deeply into the saving action of Jesus Christ. It will happen, not by merely recalling the events of those saving days, but by bringing the saving grace Jesus won for me in my need, to others who cannot lay their cloaks or spread their reeds before the One we acknowledge as Lord and Savior.
The cut branches were trampled on and left to dry. Our blessed branches become a symbol of God’s saving grace for us all. It is not the branch that is important, but the saving grace it represents. May we welcome the Lord and His saving grace this week.

PLEASE REMEMBER OUR PARISH IN YOUR WILL
No matter what the size of your estate, if you want to provide for relatives, friends and our Parish you will need a WILL. If you die without one, you lose control of the disposition of your assets. The state law in which you reside will tell your family where your money and property goes.
Naming our Parish as a charitable beneficiary in your Will is simple. Through careful review of this alternative you may save further income and estate taxes. For further information, you and/or your attorney may contact:

ParisHPAY ENABLES PARISHIONERS TO MAKE THEIR REGULAR DONATIONS TO THE PARISH ELECTRONICALLY VIA AUTOMATIC DEDUCTIONS TO CHECKING OR SAVINGS ACCOUNTS, OR VIA CREDIT CARD. SOME OPT TO GIVE MONTHLY WHILE OTHERS ALSO TAKE THE OPPORTUNITY TO USE PARISH PAY FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS LIKE CHRISTMAS AND EASTER. In whatever manner they have chosen to use ParishPay they have found the system to be very facilitating.
Weencourage you to enroll the ParishPay website under St JosephWestVillage link. The St. Joseph Soup Kitchen has also adopted ParishPay, we encourage you to think of the service the soup provides when giving.
ParishPay provides a steady stream of revenue for the parish, and enables funds to be collected, recorded, and deposited efficiently and effectively. Also, this revenue becomes a steady source of income, not subject to the fluctuations that our regular Sunday collections exhibit, and helps us plan and manage parish finances and activities more efficiently. It will also let the donor make and annual Parish gift and pay this gift over the entire year. It eliminates the need for writing a weekly check or making a cash gift through the offering plate each week. Parishioners may increase or decrease these gifts as their circumstances allow.
We know that many parishioners wish to give generously and regularly. ParishPay provides the vehicle for this faithful generosity
Please call the Rectory and inform us if you know of anyone who is homebound, feeling the effects of old age or is ill and not able to attend mass. We will be happy to visit them on a regular basis and provide them with the sacraments at home. Call 212 741-1274

Dear Parishioners—There has been a long tradition at St. Joseph’s of welcoming newly baptized and confirmed women and men into the Church, by continuing the Easter Vigil celebration in Farrell Hall immediately following the Easter Vigil Mass.
This celebration is made possible through the generous donation of desserts for this special occasion by parishioners. Desserts can be cake, cookies, cheese or fruit. I hope you can assist us by bringing your favorite dessert to the 3 pm Good Friday service or to the morning prayers on Holy Saturday. We will be decorating Farrell Hall immediately following Holy Saturday morning prayers. If you would like to assist us in this decoration, you would be most welcome. Thank you. Judy Magida
Easter Eggs for the Soup Kitchen: Parishioners may drop off easter eggs on either Friday, April 6 from 6-8pm or Saturday, April 7 anytime from 8am - 12noon.
Save the Date! The St. Joseph's Soup Kitchen will be holding a fundraiser in Casserly Hall to celebrate our 30th Anniversary. The event will take place on Tuesday, May 1st, 2012—the feast day of St. Joseph the Worker. More details to follow.
LETTER FROM FR. McGUIRE
Dear Friends,
Today we enter that most holy of all weeks. We once again, are invited to embrace the love of God the Father and of the Lord Jesus Christ, revealed so dramatically in the events we celebrate in each of these holy days. May this be a moment when we experience the generosity of the Lord’s mercy and kindness for us.
Next Sunday, Easter, we will have our usual influx of many whom we only see on High Holy Days. Our 11:30 Mass is expecially popular and so I have for the last years issued tickets for seating in the main sections of our church. This is primarily to guarantee seating for our regular parishioners who support us all year long and to whom we have our primary obligation.
May I remind you to get a ticket(s) and to arrive by 11 A.M. to guarantee seating.
Have a blessed Holy Week!
