Empathy
Objectives:
The student will know (concept): new vocabulary; the concept of empathy.
The student will be able to (demonstration):
An ability to think about and respond to a writing prompt; recall of information from the novel; fluency.
Materials/Resources Needed:
4 copies of Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank; 3 journals; 4 copies of text hand-out from diary entry from Diary of a Young Girl; timer; interview with Miep Gies recorded by me.

Description: Writing prompt, hot read, share out, reading comprehension questions.
Instructional Steps:
Teacher Role/Action/Instructional Strategy
One student will do a one-minute, timed, cold read of the diary entry.Students will graph the result.
The other two students will answer the daily writing prompt in their own personal diaries. The writing prompt is,
“If you were in Miep’s shoes, would you have done the same thing? Why or why not? Also, what does it mean to have empathy?”
The students will take turns doing the cold read until all students have read and all students have answered the writing prompt in their diaries.
Teacher will read the same diary entry twice as students read along in their heads. Teacher and students will discuss challenging vocabulary.
Students will then practice reading the text on their own for one minute.
Students will each do a one-minute, timed, hot read with teacher.
Students will graph the result.
Students will answer reading comprehension questions and write a short retell of the diary entry.
Students and teacher will discuss the answers.
Students will listen to an interview with Miep Gies acted out and recorded on vocaroo.com.
Students can share out reactions to interview and responses to writing prompt.
Teacher will read diary entries and make comments for students to read next class. /

Students perform a cold read with expression, fluency, and accuracy.Students will graph the result (words per minute) on a Six-Minute Solutions fluency graph.
Teacher defines multi-syllabic words and ensures students are able to pronounce and understand pronouns. The teacher reminds sweep syllables into words to blend them together.
Students will then practice reading the text on their own for one minute before doing the hot read.
Students perform a cold read with expression, fluency, and accuracy.
Students will graph the result of their hot read (words per minute) on a Six-Minute Solutions fluency graph.
Students can share out responses to writing prompt.
Adaptations and Enrichments:
Vocabulary enrichment; oral language development; academic language development; Interview with Miep Gies.
