General information
Each year at the School Sport SA primaryswimming championships there are specific events for students with a disability to compete in multiclass events.
Eligibility
Students must meet the age criteria and be attending an affiliated primary school to compete at the School Sport SAprimary swimming championships. Multiclass swimmers must be able to swim the required distance. Where possible multiclass swimmers should compete and qualify at a primarydistrict swimming carnival. Students are to wear their district sports top or school top while at the championships.
Multiclass swimmers may compete in three of the following events, 50m freestyle, 100m freestyle, 50m breaststroke and 50m backstroke.
Classification
Classification exists in sport to support as fair competition as possible amongst athletes with different disabilities. By grouping athletes with similar levels of functional ability into classes for competition, the outcomes of the competition become based on athletic performance rather than on differences that exist in their disabilities. All multiclass swimmers must obtain a classification if they wish to compete in swimming at a state and national level.
Classification categories
If students do not fall into one of the following categories, they may not be able to be classified. If students cannot be classified, they are ineligible to compete as a multiclass swimmer at a state or national competition and therefore must compete with the able-bodied athletes.
Physical / Functional – Amputee, cerebral palsy, spina bifida, spinal cord injury, congenital limb deficiency, short stature, etc
Vision Impairment – Ranging from those who are legally blind to total blindness
Intellectual – An IQ equal to or less than 75 as measured by a clinically recognised cognitive measurement tool.
(Please note: Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADD/ADHD and other behavioural disabilities must have an IQ of 75 and below to be eligible)
Deaf – At least 40db in the better ear as assessed by an audiologist or audiometrist
Transplant – Organ or bone marrow, those with cystic fibrosis or on dialysis, a corneal recipient, or those awaiting transplantation.
Classification is coordinated by Swimming SA and must be organised 60 days prior to the closing date for nominations. Please contact Swimming SA on 08 7123 0848 to arrange a classification assessment.
Entry fee
$5.00 each for competitors and spectators to be paid at the gate.
Each family will receive one program book.
Competitor information
All multiclass swimmers should arrive at the championship at least 30 minutes prior to their first event and report to the designated coordinator who will direct the multiclass swimmers and parents to the reserved seating area. Only competitors and approved event assistants are permitted on pool deck. Following each event competitors will be seated near the presentation podium to wait for the results to be calculated.
Places will be calculated using the ‘multi disability method’ using the Multi Class Point Score (MCPS) for the various classes.
Medals will be presented in two categories: 10-13 boys and 10-13 girls for each event.
School Sport Australia (interstate program)
Performances achieved at the School Sport SA Swimming Championships, and selected SwimmingSA Championships in early 2018will be used for state team selections. In order to be selected for events, 50m freestyle, 100m freestyle, 50m breaststroke and 50m backstroke multiclass swimmers are expected to compete in those individual events. The state team is for multiclass swimmers eligible to compete in the 10, 11 & 12 year age groups.
