A RESOLUTION adjourning the Senate in honor of Holly Buckner Salisbury upon the occasion of her imminent retirement on June 30, 2005 as Executive Director of the University of Kentucky's Singletary Center for the Arts.

WHEREAS, it seems appropriate from time to time for this honorable body to reflect upon the contributions of special individuals who have enriched the lives of so many Kentuckians; and

WHEREAS, Holly Buckner Salisbury was born on May 29, 1944, a native of Bourbon County, Kentucky, and longtime resident of Fayette County, Kentucky; and

WHEREAS, Holly Buckner Salisbury is the daughter of the late Catlett Lockhart Buckner and Marjorie Witherspoon Routt Buckner; she is the adored mother of a son and daughter-in-law, Brent Buckner Salisbury and Erin Downey Salisbury, and a daughter and son-in-law, Leila Salisbury and Bill Flowers, all of Lexington; and

WHEREAS, Holly Buckner Salisbury graduated from St. Agnes High School in Virginia; she earned her A. B. from St. Mary's College in St. Mary's, Maryland, and her B. A. from George Washington University in Washington, D. C.; and she also studied painting at the Accademia dell'Arte in Florence, Italy, which was founded in 1563, and was the first school established in Europe specifically to teach the techniques of drawing, painting, and sculpture; and

WHEREAS, Holly Buckner Salisbury has deep Kentucky roots; she is a member of a very prominent Bourbon County family; her father graduated from the University of Virginia and received his law degree from the University of Kentucky; he was a farmer and he practiced law; from 1953 to 1973, the family lived in Washington, D. C., and while in our nation's capital, Catlett Lockhart Buckner worked for Senator James Eastland of Mississippi, who was also President Pro Tem of the Senate and Chairman of the Judiciary Committee which oversaw the Importation and Naturalization Committee; Mr. Buckner was a staff lawyer who assisted Senator Eastland in writing legislation for that committee; and during this time, Holly's mother, Marjorie Witherspoon Routt Buckner, was involved in the Episcopal church, both in Paris, Kentucky and in Washington, D. C., where she helped establish the Goodwin House, a nonprofit retirement community run by the church and one of the first of its kind in the area; and

WHEREAS, Holly Buckner Salisbury's formal education prepared her for a career in the arts; she has been Executive Director of the University of Kentucky's Singletary Center for the Arts since its inception in 1979; and during her tenure at the Singletary Center, she has demonstrated extraordinary vision and leadership that has brought light and inspiration to so many lives; under her auspices, she is credited with numerous educational programs and she has enhanced the educational opportunities for many children; she has also demonstrated an unwavering and unselfish dedication in the sharing of her knowledge and expertise with the community; and

WHEREAS, the Singletary Center is home to the Lexington Philharmonic, the Corner on Classics, which is the University's program of international classical music stars, and it has been the stage for approximately 200 performances by the University of Kentucky's School of Music; other organizations, such as the Central Kentucky Youth Orchestra, the Lexington Chamber Chorale, the Lexington Singers, and the Kentucky Ballet Theater perform regularly at the center; through the years, the Center has hosted more than 8,870 events, and Holly Buckner Salisbury has introduced many world-renowned artists to the community, such as Jessye Norman, Isaac Stern, Itzhak Perlman, Yo Yo Ma, Emmanuel Ax, Leontyne Price, Ella Fitzgerald, Pearl Bailey, Oscar Peterson, Rosemary Clooney, Andy Williams, and the Kings Singers, to mention only a few; and

WHEREAS, due to its positive impact in the community through the arts, the Singletary Center is the recipient of the Community Arts Award, presented by Governor Ernie Fletcher on February 8, 2005; and

WHEREAS, Holly Buckner Salisbury will be retiring as Executive Director of the University of Kentucky's Singletary Center for the Arts on June 30, 2005; and

WHEREAS, we are reminded upon the retirement of this wonderful lady, talented artist, and gifted arts administrator that life is composed of two parts: that which is past; and that which is to come -- a prologue; and if the past sets the example for the future, Holly Buckner Salisbury will continue to make many contributions to the arts in Lexington and throughout the Commonwealth;

NOW, THEREFORE,

Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

Section 1. The Senate is proud and honored to recognize Holly Buckner Salisbury for her contributions to the citizens of this great Commonwealth, which are beyond measure and will have lasting impact. Her contributions as Executive Director of the University of Kentucky's Singletary Center for the Arts should serve as an example for those who succeed her. We wish her success in all future endeavors.

Section 2. When the Senate adjourns this day, it does so in honor of Holly Buckner Salisbury upon the occasion of her imminent retirement on June 30, 2005.
