Mini Landscape Workshop

Supply list (revised 3/8/13)

Instructor: Helene Knott 503 631-8806

This class is aimed at those who are interested in landscape quilts but cannot devote the time for a multi-session class and complex appliquéd project. The landscape projects are smaller, simplified and fused resulting in instant gratification. Once the fabric is chosen, these mini quiltsgo together quickly and can then be finished with borders to make a small wall hanging measuring approximately 10”x 12”. The focus of the class will be on using fabrics creatively to get marvelous effects in pictorial quilts. For additional images of the various projects contact the teacher at r visit

Please be courteous to others by arriving for class with the correct supplies. Contact me at 503-631-8806 if you have any questions.

Tools/materials:

  • Sewing machine (optional): The projects will be fused in the class and can have borders added and be quilted or embellished with additional machine stitching at a later date therefore, a sewing machine is optional for the class.
  • Plug strips/extension cords:Bring if classroom does not provide these items.
  • Rotary cutter, mat and cutting ruler (optional): a 4”x12”, 3”x 18” or similar sized ruler and mat for squaring and trimming finished panel.
  • Teflon pressing sheet (very important!): to protect the iron and ironing board from adhesive
  • Scissors: Remember you will be cutting through paper and fusible webbing adhered to fabric so bring a pair of scissors you don’t mind using for these products. Make sure they are sharp and fine-jawed enough to cut out fine detail. A pair of stork style embroidery scissors would be perfect.
  • Pencil
  • Pigma pen: to trace the patterns on muslin if desired for a registration guide.
  • Thread:100% cotton in a neutral color (only if you plan to add borders)
  • Iron and board or pad: Bring if classroom does not provide these items.
  • Kit: There are two pattern kits top choose from – a Seascape and a Waterscape, at a cost of $20 per kit. The kits include: muslin base, fabrics for the landscape and fusible web. Kits are for the scenic center only and do not include borders, thread or finishing supplies like backing or batting. The kits come in a variety of colors, seasons and times of day and each kit will be a unique combination of fabrics that may vary from samples shown.
  • Border Fabrics: Though the kit does not include preselected borders, the teacher will have some precut strips available for students to choose from that they may have if they find one they like. Students may wish to bring fabric from home for borders.
  • Optional Finishing Materials: Students rarely get to the layering and quilting stage in the class but they may want to bring backing and batting (a 14” x 16” of each should suffice), safety pins and additional thread in a variety of colors to begin quilting their mini quilts just in case.
