Course Description: Principals of Business, Marketing & Finance introduces students to the knowledge and skills in economics and private enterprise systems, the impact of global business, marketing of goods and services, advertising and product pricing. Students will analyze the sales process and financial management principals. The course will allow the student to reinforce, apply, and transfer academic knowledge and skills to a variety of interesting and relevant activities, problems and settings in business, marketing and finance.
Text: There will be a variety of text utilized, but the primary text will be Marketing Dynamicsfrom Glencoe
• Students will be assigned numbered textbooks that will be returned to the bookshelf at the conclusion of each class period. These textbooks will NOT be taken home.
Course Objectives: The goals of Principals of Business, Marketing & Finance course are to:
• Increase student awareness of career planning in the world of business.
• Inform students of the increasingly complex world of work.
• Assist students in developing appropriate attitudes about work.
• Provide students a broad overview of business as related to global society.
• Enhance student awareness and understanding of emerging trends in business & marketing.
• Help students to recognize how they can prepare for and advance in business careers.
• Empower students to think critically and for themselves.
• Reinforce basic skills in communication, human relations, and reading.
• Develop an understanding of economic systems.
• Help students to function as responsible citizens.
• The students will analyze cost and profit relationships in finance.
• Examine the organization structure and functions of business.
• DECA background and information.
Requirements: Along with daily work, the student will be given various written tests and projects during the semester. If the student’s work is turned in past the due date and time, 10 points will be deducted for each day the assignment is late. The student’s grade for each semester will be determined according to the grading criteria which follows.
• NOTEBOOK: Each student is required to have a 3-ring notebook/ binder to include 5-subject dividers with insertable tabs. The sections should be labeled as follows:
1. Vocabulary/ Notes
2. Projects
3. Worksheets/ Bookwork
4. Writing Assignments
5. DECA/Misc.
Students will be expected to keep their 3 Ring Binder in the class room. It is to be maintained and all daily work, projects, DECA club informationand quiz/test scores are to be kept in the journal in chronological order. It is this Journal that will be utilized to keep track of the main portion of daily work grades, along with class participation.
• INTERNET POLICY:Students are not to be on the Internet/Smart Phone unless instructed to do so by the teacher. The Internet will only be used for instructional purposes. THERE WILL BE NO E-MAIL, FACEBOOK, MYSPACE OR COMPUTER/ INTERNET GAMES PLAYED IN THIS CLASS. Not adhering to this policy will result in loss of participation points and on subsequentoccasion will result in referral to the appropriate administrator for disciplinary action.
To Be Successful In This Class: The student should remember the following:
• Be Honest.
• Respect others.
• No use of the Internet without teacher permission.
• No Internet/ Computer games will be played in this class.
• No food or drinks allowed in this classroom.
• No rolling around in chairs.
• No writing on computers, books, or tables.
• Do not unplug anything unless told otherwise.
• Do not “play” with computers or change settings or software in any way.
• Put trash in appropriate place.
• Keep your work area neat and clean.
• Keep all other supplies except for this class away from the work station.
• Not sitting on tables, desks, or countertops.
• Be prompt and regular in class attendance.
• Listen and follow directions the first time.
• BE IN ASSIGNED SEAT WHEN THE BELL RINGS AND DO NOT LEAVE IT UNLESS INSTRUCTED.
• DO NOT TALK WHEN THE TEACHER IS INSTRUCTING. (Also when other students have the floor.)
• Adhere to all rules set forth by the teacher and the administration as listed in this course syllabus and the student handbook.
DECA: Students will have the opportunity to join DECA (an association of Marketing Students). Club dues are $20 per year and can be paid anytime during the first month of the semester. Willis High has a strong and successful DECA Chapter and students are encouraged to participate. Through DECA, students will be given an opportunity to compete at the region, state, and national levels. Students will also participate in various community activities, and also be involved in Chapter meetings on campus during the school day. The goals of DECA are as follows:
• To prepare marketing education students to take their proper place in the business world.
• To develop leadership characteristics.
• To develop self-confidence and self-acceptance.
• To develop a greater understanding of our competitive, free enterprise system.
• To develop high ethical standards in personal and business relationships.
• To develop effective international relationships.
• To develop a healthy competitive spirit.
• To develop a greater appreciation of the responsibilities of citizenship.
• To develop a greater awareness of career opportunities in marketing.
• To develop greater proficiency in oral, written, and electronic communication.
* NOTE: The teacher reserves the right to make changes in the course content and/or grading procedures as needed.
Grades will be determined as follows:: 60% Assessment (Test/Quiz/Proj. Grades), 40% Daily Work & Assignments.. The only extra credit points given out will be for participation in DECA projects and competitions. The CTE late work policy will apply (-15% 1day late, -30% 2 days late, -50% 3 days late and 0 credit after that point.). There is a $20 Lab Fee associated with DECA Club Membership, as participation in the DECA Club is a major determination in the class grade it is vital to be a member of the club. Any students unable to provide the lab fee must make arrangements with instructor to complete a project in lieu of DECA Club membership.
