DESCRIPTION:
Under general supervision, performs a variety of general library work in technical services and/or public services to assist patrons with daily operational needs of the Library, such as copy cataloging, processing, circulation and shelving library materials, computer use, instructing patrons in use of library resources, general reference and other related duties as assigned. The Library Assistant position differs from the Library Aide position in level of responsibility and associated skill set required. The Library Assistant performs paraprofessional library work associated with a specialized library function, division or program. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Performs general library tasks including answering incoming telephone calls and transferring them to the appropriate department when necessary; pulling and processing holds; shelving materials; quality checking media items. Prepares the library for opening and closing; maintains public areas in a clean and orderly fashion. Provides exceptional customer service; greets and directs patrons to various locations and resources; registers new patrons and updates patron information on the library computer system; assists patrons with use of Internet computers, wireless access, electronic resources and reader's advisory. Monitors patron behavior and ensures a positive interaction with staff and others; answers patron's routine inquiries; explains and enforces library policies and procedures; resolves complaints and/or refers patrons to a supervisor as needed. Assists Librarians and supervisors with special projects and events. Acts as a lead by providing training and instruction to staff and volunteers in the use of library reference tools, integrated library system and other library resources. May assist in interviewing and scheduling staff. Maintains schedules at public service points. May participate in Yavapai Library Network (YLN) meetings to discuss and resolve problems including ideas for improvement, and keeps updated on library plans and activities; performs other related duties as required. Library Assistants may be assigned to one or multiple divisions with specialized duties to that area such as: Cataloging/Acquisitions - works with book vendors used by the Prescott Valley Public Library selectors to ensure orders are fully received and all back orders are either cancelled or filled. Works with Library selectors regarding their purchase order balances. Requires knowledge of the YLN Cataloging module. Circulation maintains and updates confidential patron records, evaluates the condition of returned materials; assesses and collects fines and negotiates discrepancies. Maintains the automated materials handler. Prints out overdue notices in an effort to recover overdue library materials. Reconciles daily cash deposit and print copier deposits. Compiles monthly statistical reports via web based reporting systems. Children - assists with programs such as Children's story time, summer reading programs, special events, and projects such as modifying catalog records, checking book lists against the catalog, etc. Assists patrons with finding materials, both in and out of the Children's area as well as online. Requires knowledge of YLN Circulation and Cataloging modules. Teens - assists Librarians with Teen programs and special events for young adults, maintains knowledge of YA literature and library principals, promotes and advertises young adult library services throughout the community, assists with ordering and collection development. Adults - follows the lead of a librarian to create greater public awareness of library events for adults with fliers, press releases, appearances on radio or TV, etc. Schedule these events, facilitates room set-up, and introduces, evaluates, and conducts selected programs. Creates programs which meet demand for entertainment and educational progress in cooperation with a diverse array of presenters and institutions. Collaborates with other selectors at Prescott Valley Public Library while maintaining awareness of resource availability within the YLN to develop specific collection areas such as music, movies, or print genres. Works within a budget and annual time constraints with a variety of formats and vendors.
TYPICAL QUALIFICATION:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be an Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university AND two years of customer service experience involving direct contact with the public acting in a team leader role, preferably in a library setting.
