PHYSICAL EDUCATION ASSOCIATION OF IRELAND
The Physical Education Association of Ireland was founded in 1968, at a time when awareness of the importance of physical education within the school curriculum was becoming more and more evident. It is a voluntary organisation representing the professional interests of physical educators at all levels of the education system. The main objectives are:
(a)to improve standards and performances within physical education by providing members with opportunities and materials for professional growth;
(b)to keep members up-to-date on the latest issues, trends, technologies and legislative development un physical education and related areas;
(c)to support and disseminate outstanding research in the area of physical culture;
(d)to provide national leadership and opportunities to influence policy and direction in physical education;
(e)to safeguard members’ interests by speaking with a strong unified voice on relevant issues;
(f)to increase public awareness and understanding of the contributions of the physical education profession to Irish life.
The association is run by physical educators on a voluntary basis. A national executive committee is elected each year at the association’s annual general meeting. The committee composes of ten physical educators, one undergraduate student representative. The president acts as chairperson of the executive committee.
