Poster Abstract Information and Application

Delmarva Chapter - AACN Critical Care Conference 2013

The 9th Annual Delmarva Chapter- AACN Critical Care Conference invites you to submit an abstract for poster presentation. The conference will be held October 18, 2013, at Peninsula Regional Medical Center, in Salisbury, MD. Share with your colleagues your creative patient care approaches, interesting case studies, clinical innovation, research, education and performance improvement initiatives.

·  Poster presenters must be registered and in attendance at the conference and available with their poster during specific poster presentation times as noted on the conference brochure to answer questions.

·  Deadline for abstract submissions is May 15, 2013.

·  Abstract acceptance will be communicated by June 1, 2013.

Abstract Guidelines:

Titles should be brief and clearly indicate the content of the abstract. Capitalize the first letter of each word, except prepositions. No abbreviations should be used in the title. Only standard abbreviations will be accepted. Special or unusual abbreviations should be placed in parentheses after the full word appears the first time. Arabic numerals should be used to indicate numbers, except when used in the beginning of a paragraph. Nonproprietary (generic) names of drugs should be used.

The main author of the abstract is responsible for meeting submission deadlines and having the poster printed. The author(s) is/are responsible for all expenses related to having the abstract printed in a poster format suitable for display at the conference. Only abstracts for papers that have not been published in a peer-reviewed journal may be submitted; however, research presented within the past year at another organization's poster session is allowed. Please limit the abstract title to 50 characters and the abstract body to no more than 300 words.

Abstracts should be informative and must include the following sections:

• Purpose: a brief statement explaining why the project was conducted, preferably limited to one sentence.

• Methodology: materials, methodology and any analytical procedures applied, preferably limited to two sentences.

• Results: should be presented in sufficient detail to support the conclusions. (It is inadequate to state:

"The results will be discussed" or "The data will be presented.")

Nursing Implications: how the result will affect/change nursing practice

• Conclusions: the authors' opinion about the meaning of the study.

If you feel you will not have adequate results in time for the conference, we urge you to consider submitting next year.

Abstract Selection Criteria

Abstracts submitted will be evaluated for:

• Relevance to evidence based practice relevant to the nursing profession

• Originality

• Clarity

• Flow and Balance

• Knowledge acquired

All applicants will receive notification on or before June 1, 2013. If selected, please refer to following recommendations for your poster:

Recommended Guidelines for Posters:

·  The typical poster surface in the Hallowell Conference Center is table top for self-standing and tri-fold posters approximately 36 in high x 48 in long. The background should be a neutral color with lettering of at least one and a half inches high for easy reading from approximately two to three feet away.

·  The poster should have the title placed at the top with the authors' names and affiliations (optional) beneath it. The poster title should match your abstract title.

·  The poster should include a copy of the abstract and expanded sections of the purpose, methodology, results, nursing implications and conclusions as appropriate to the type of abstract.

·  Avoid the use of script fonts that are difficult to read.

·  All illustrations (graphs, pictures, figures, tables) should be large enough for easy observation. All figures and tables should have brief captions.

·  Matte finish on graphs or pictures gives better visibility due to reduction of glare.

Handouts of abstract are optional.

Poster presenters may arrive beginning at 7:00am.

Poster set up must be complete by 8:00am.

During the poster session, be prepared to answer questions about your presentation.
