For each of the four categories (success factors) below, please concisely address what qualifies you to provide service to the department for which you are running. In developing your responses, please focus on specific experiences you have had that can support your candidacy (e.g. previous curriculum development, committee participation, relevant professional development, mentoring, etc.):
Leadership (e.g. developing a shared goal of improving the department and an abiding belief in the future of the department)
I believe that CIS/CS degrees are an ever evolving and growing programs. The need to plan for these evolutions in order to keep our degrees current and relevant to students is more important now than ever. I would like to help every instructor bring their visions for their concentrations/degrees to life. I would do this by giving all of the instructors a place to express their ideas and I would support them in promoting those ideas.
I have helped to put together the new Business Analytics program that will start in Fall 2018, and have worked with CIS faculty to update some of the current concentrations. I have also worked in small teams to revise or create new curriculum. I am QM Peer Reviewer certified and have my certificate for Assessing Learning for College Credit. I have actively participated in peer observations, part time scheduling, and situational mentoring for colleagues.
Interpersonal skills (e.g. developing productive relationships between and among individuals in the workplace and the ability to facilitate a diverse group and help them reach compromise)
I would like to have regular meetings with each concentration or degree to talk about what is going on in their area and to find out what support is needed. I would try to help everyone find compromise for what is in the best interests of our students, faculty, and our degrees. I realize that I am not an expert in every concentration, so I think it is important to listen to the content experts about what is important for their areas. I also think it is important to keep faculty abreast of potential changes that may be coming down the road.
Resource development skills (e.g. the ability to reasonably advocate for human and fiscal resources to support the area you represent)
I would work with the BIT administration to secure personnel or fiscal resources that are needed to enhance the concentrations. This would include working within BIT’s budget, helping to request money from the Perkins budget, and go to our grant office with ideas for grants.
I would also like to expand the internship opportunities for our students and coordinate more outreach to promote our degrees. I have done this in the past and would prioritize these two activities as much as possible.
Administrative skills (e.g. the ability to guide processes critical to the core function of the area you represent with attention to detail)
I am very organized and feel that I could help plan and execute any projects or ideas that CIS/CS faculty decide they want to implement. I am very goal driven and generally plan my time to work on projects and jobs before they are due. I am very good at following up on ideas and tasks to be sure everything gets done. My prior experience as Director of Instruction gives me insight into CNM’s administrative processes.
Most importantly, I would like to keep in regular contact with all of the CIS/CS faculty, keeping them informed of the various projects that CNM or BIT is looking at implementing, and keeping them informed of how I am representing them at the various meetings I attend as chair. I feel that it is not my opinion that I will take to these meetings, but the opinions and wishes of those in CIS/CS. In order to do that, I need to have regular and substantial conversations with all of the faculty I will be representing.
Goals - In consideration of the Chair Job Duties and the overall Mission, Vision and Strategic Directions of CNM, what goalsdo you have for the area you represent over the three year term of chair service:
1)Advocate and help grow the enrollment and graduates in CIS/CS
2)Increase internship opportunities for students
3)Attendoutreach events with faculty to promote CIS/CS
4)Facilitate the exploration and building of any new concentrations, and enhancing or modifying current concentrations
5)Listen to and represent the CIS/CS faculty
