Standard: E.ES.01.21: Compare daily changes in the weather related to temperature (cold, hot, warm, cool); cloud cover (cloudy, partly cloudy, foggy); precipitation (rain, snow, hail, freezing rain); wind (breezy, windy, calm).

Lesson Title: Making Decisions based on Daily Weather

Prior Knowledge:

Students will already by aware of the vocabulary necessary to discuss daily changes in the weather. Vocabulary students will already have mastered includes: temperature, cold, hot, warm, cool, cloud cover, cloudy, partly cloudy, foggy, precipitation, rain, snow, hail, freezing rain, wind, breezy, windy, and calm.

Lesson Overview:

After completion of the lesson students will be able to:

·  Observe and compare the weather related to temperature, cloud cover, precipitation, and wind.

·  Choose the appropriate clothing based on the weather.

List of Materials:

·  Access to the internet and the website http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Ja4j4ltnRw with speakers and some type of projection.

·  “The Weather Today” bulletin board with associated descriptive pictures

·  Lyrics to “The Weather Song” to the tune of “Oh My Darlin”

·  “Frank the Forecaster” bear with associated clothing.

·  Construction Paper

·  Straws

·  Ribbon

·  Crayons

·  Tape

·  Book: “I call it Sky” by Will C. Howell, illustrated by John Ward

Engage: Music Video and Song

Time: 5 minutes

Procedure:

1.  Connect to the website http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Ja4j4ltnRw

2.  Allow the students to get up and, if they want to, dance as they watch the music video about different types of weather.

3.  Sing “The Weather Song” to the tune of “Oh My Darlin”

Explain: Bulletin Board

Time: 5 minutes

Procedure:

1.  Tell the students it is time to look outside and see what the weather is like today. Allow them time to get up and move to the window if necessary.

2.  Review what the weather was like yesterday (this information should still be posted on the board.)

3.  Select volunteers to attach the appropriate descriptive pictures to each of the four areas of weather (temperature, cloud cover, precipitation, wind.)

4.  Review the weather of the day by going through each area.

Explore: Frank the Forecaster and Making Kites

Time: 13 minutes

Procedure:

1.  After the students know what the weather is like today, discuss what type of clothing would be appropriate.

2.  Select volunteers to pick different items of clothing and dress Frank the Forecaster.

3.  Review how the clothes he wore yesterday were or were not the same as the clothes we wore today.

4.  Explain that the clothes we wear are not the only things that depend on the weather. For example, in order to fly a kite, the perfect weather conditions must be present.

5.  Pass out materials for construction a kite (construction paper and straws that have been cut to the proper size, ribbon, and crayons).

6.  Have the students decorate their kites.

7.  Assemble the kites with tape.

8.  Discuss the appropriate weather conditions for flying a kite and decide if those conditions are present today.

Elaborate: “I call it Sky”

Time: 10 minutes

Procedure:

1.  Introduce the book by talking about the author and related stories that the children may have read.

2.  Read the book aloud to the class.

3.  Discuss with the children how the weather changed in the book. Ask the children their likes and dislikes of the book.

Evaluate: Throughout the Lesson

Throughout the lesson the students will be evaluated on how well they understand the daily changes of weather. As students are able to decide how to dress Frank the Forecaster and when to fly the kite, their understand of weather and how it’s daily changes effects us will be apparent.
