Science Classroom Policies and Procedures
General Guidelines
· Students must come to class with all necessary materials, which may include assigned textbook, notes, paper, assignments and pen/pencil. NO EXCEPTIONS.
· No student will be permitted to leave this classroom unless called to the office, becomes ill, or a personal emergency arises. Restrooms are located near our classroom. Please drop off your materials, check in with me, and use the restroom before class begins.
· Sleeping in class is not tolerated. Firstoffense will result in standing for the remainder of class. Further offenses will result in guardian contact/office referral/disciplinary action.
· Students are to remain seated in their assigned seats and are to be working until I dismiss you. The bell does not dismiss you. Do not pack up early. NO EXCEPTIONS.
· No food or drink is allowed without special consent.
· CHEATING in any form will not be tolerated. Refer to the Science Department's Academic Integrity document.
· Respect is a must in this classroom- to the teacher, your peers, and the room and supplies.
· All student handbook rules will be enforced. Please be aware of the cell phone policy. Your phone will be confiscated. You will not receive a warning.
· Purses, bags, and backpacks are not to be handled during class. No blankets.
· Horseplay in class is not tolerated. On lab days this will result in a zero for the activity and possible exclusion from upcoming labs. Alternative seat work assignments may be given.
South Warren High School Science Department Academic Integrity
Unless specifically authorized by their teachers, students are expected to individually complete all of
their own, original work on each assignment in each class. A teacher who believes that a student at SWHS
has committed plagiarism will issue a penalty for academic dishonesty.
ACADEMIC DISHONESTY
What is academic dishonesty?
Academic dishonesty is defined as conduct that violates the fundamental principles of truth,
honesty, and integrity. The following conduct is specifically cited:
· Supplying or using work or answers that are not wholly one’s own
· Providing or accepting assistance with completing assignments or exams
· Interfering through any means with another’s academic work
· Faking lab data or results
The following are examples of behaviors that will not be tolerated:
· Turning in an assignment, paper, project, or exam that is not wholly your own work
· Copying answers from another student’s test
· Receiving questions/answers from students who have already taken a test or quiz you are
scheduled to take
· Receiving questions/answers from students who have already completed an assignment you have
yet to complete
· Using an author’s words or phrases without proper credit assigned
A teacher who believes a student has committed academic dishonesty will issue a penalty grade that
includes, but is not limited to, a failing grade on the assignment or exam.
The best way to protect yourself from an allegation of academic dishonesty is simple: DON’T CHEAT! The
stakes are too costly for your academic career and reputation.
Make Up Exams and Quizzes Due to Excused Absences
If a student knows ahead of time that he/she will miss an exam or quiz they may arrange a time to take it before or after school prior to the scheduled date. All other make up exams and quizzes must be made up immediately upon return to class. It is the student’s responsibility to see me upon arrival to class and ask for the missed exam/quiz to ensure substantial time to complete the assessment.
Make Up Work Due to Excused Absences
In the event of a planned excused absence (sports, band, choir, FFA, medical appointment, etc…), students should arrange with me a time to pick up their work before the date of the planned absence in order to avoid falling behind in class. This work is due immediately upon return to class. If assigned work is not with you, it will be considered late. In the event of an unplanned but excused absence, students will be given two days per each day’s excused absence to make up their work. Students should check the calendar in our classroom for missed assignments and handouts. Please see me before or after school or before class in order to have enough time to thoroughly explain the missed assignments. Please do not ask for make up work during class. It is the student’s responsibility to ask for and complete this work in a timely manner. If the need for an extension arises, please speak with me in advance.
Make Up Work, Exams, and Quizzes Due to Unexcused Absences
Not accepted. Please read your student handbook carefully and be aware of the five day rule for clearing unexcused absences.
Late Work
Not accepted. Completed assignments left at home, on the bus, in lockers, in another classroom, etc… are considered late work. Completed assignments that are with a student but unable to be located (ex. folded and tucked in page 94 of your math book at the bottom of your book bag) when asked for are also considered late work. Late work will not be accepted, except in the case of excused absences. Students will be allowed to drop two classwork/homework grades per semester. Habitual late work may result in an office referral or cafeteria detention.
Tardy Policy
When the tardy bell sounds, I will close the door. You must be completely inside the room before the bell finishes ringing to avoid being marked as tardy. As a courtesy to you, I will let you know when you are being marked as tardy so you may keep track.
Extra Help
Please see me before or after class if you feel like you are not able to understand the material. I also encourage you to ask questions during class. I am more than happy to meet with you at a time that works around your schedule if you provide me with advanced notice. You are also welcome to email me with questions or post them to our classroom blog.
