LUMINALE MIDWEST:DETROIT LIGHT FESTIVAL
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Sunlight on Cold Water October 5 – December 5, 2012
Opening party – October 5, 2012, 6-8 PM
Kunsthalle Detroit is pleased to announce the opening of an exhibition devoted exclusively to Luminale Detroit: Detroit Light Festival: Sunlight on Cold Water. The survey brings together works of 24 international multimedia artists representing twelve countries and spanning both the 20th and 21st Centuries. A wide range of light-based works is presented: optical wall painting, fiber-optics installations, LED Light sculptures, projections, videos and light programs.
The title of the exhibition is “Sunlight on Cold Water” is borrowed from a novel by Françoise Sagan, a French writer who achieved fame as a young teen, not unlike the great city in which all the hope and innovation was instilled at the promising beginning of the 20th century. Both are of French descent, (Detroit meaning The Strait, through which trade passed from Montreal down to New Orleans), both rebellious innovators and figures of hope for the literary and economical capitals at the time. In relevance to these parallels, the Light Biennial in Midwest America, young and fearless, strives to become a creative lab for light, art and technology.
Beyond its visual implications, the phrase Sunlight on Cold Water speaks of the good that is to come from a long period of arrested cultural development.
During the two months of the exhibition October 5 – December 5, 2012, many of the presented artworks will be rotating on view; lectures and panels will accompany the exhibition.
