Share your story in a 5 in 10 Presentation

5 slides-10 minutes

Have you got a good story about a project, program or event in your House or community? We would love to hear about it at the NHT State Conference in a 5 in 10 Presentation?

5 slides in 10 minutes.

Staff, members and volunteers in Neighbourhood Houses are doing fantastic things across Tasmania! It’s important that we share the great stories, success and failures that we have, so others can adapt projects to suit their local communities, and to avoid reinventing wheels. You have a lot of skills and experience, so why not share it.

We are offering six timeslots of ten minutes each, to people who are running programs or activities that you are proud of, and would like to share with others Houses from across Tasmania. Please open this link for more information.

We’re keeping the timeslots short so you don’t need to spend a lot of time preparing a big PowerPoint.

  • Ten minutes per presentation only
  • 5 slides or pictures per presentation – images, or diagrams preferably, not a lot of text
  • Sometime included at the end for a few questions to be asked.

To be considered for a spot, please send an email or letter, with a brief response to the following questions:

  1. Presentation name:
  2. What is it about the project that you want to share?
  3. What did you learn, what mistakes were made?
  4. How could this project be done in other Houses?

Please keep the information brief – just a few dot points under each question will be enough, and send through any additional posters or information you have generated to give out to promote the program.

What if I have never presented before? Perfect! This is an opportunity to have a go at delivering a short presentation for the first time. We have some resources and ideas about how you can prepare for doing a presentation. If you would prefer to do this as an interview type process, please also apply, and let us know in the application.

To express interest in delivering one of these brief presentations, please register with Jonathan by 10am Monday 22 August.
We’ll confirm your place by the end of Wednesday 24 August.

About preparing a presentation

The rule of the 6 P’s applies. - Proper Planning and Practice Produces Powerful Performance

There are various resources available to help you plan and prepare your presentation.

The best way to prepare is to do the planning, then practise your talk. If you choose a topic that you are passionate about or believe in, you probably know more than enough about the topic. It’s just about getting over the nerves, planning what it is you want to say, and some practise. Practise it first on your own, but practise it in front of someone else. Make sure you choose someone supportive and encouraging.

Here are a number of resources that you may find useful. If you do nothing else, go through the first two, but I highly recommend doing the third.

/ 5 secrets of speaking with confidence – stance, sound, smile, silence and site.
/ An article with 11 useful, practical tips for preparing for a presentation.
/ The most comprehensive, although you only really need an hour or so to read through the booklet and watch some of the videos.
/ Specific hints about improving your presentation, Relax your body
Reduce filler words – errrr, ummmmetc – The first two sections are the best

Planning your 5 in 10 presentation

Here is a template that may help you begin preparing:

Know your audience? / Staff and volunteers from Houses. Community sector workers and government department staff
Who are you? / What is your role, what is your background? What did you personally learn or gain from this project? You don’t need to say a lot about this, but know it,
What are your messages? / It would be good to have 2-3 brief points – messages, ideas, lessons that you want to share. Write them here….
What images will best illustrate your story?
How will you practise, who can help?

Please send the attached application form in by 10am Monday 22 August.
