July 5 - Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Independence Day weekend. Christians are being martyred just because they are Christian. As we celebrate our freedom, we pray for God’s protection on all who follow His Son. When we spread the good news of the saving power of Jesus we may be ridiculed or ignored, on the other hand, we may be the vehicle that, with God’s grace, that helps another get to know Jesus. The people in the synagogue asked: “Where did this man get all this? What kind of wisdom has been given him? What mighty deeds are wrought by his hands?” We can – should – answer these questions, especially for those seeking to know the Lord.

July 12 – Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Jesus sent out the twelve, two by two. We are sent out too, to speak His name and tell of His love for each of us. Paul reminds us that we have been chosen – and not only chosen, but given every spiritual blessing. And, there’s more! Through Baptism and Confirmation we have been sealed with the promised Holy Spirit. We have all the tools and graces required to tell others about Jesus. Be open to the Spirit. Pray for courage.

July 19 – Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

We are a “tuned in” people. Connected to the world 24/7. The blessing of being able to keep in touch with friends and family, and keep up with “breaking news” has its drawbacks. In this environment it can be hard to hear God’s voice. Today’s reading has the perfect antidote. Jesus said to the apostles, “Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.” Not everyone can go away on retreat, but most of us can carve out some time, even just a few minutes in the day, to sit with the Lord. If there is an Adoration chapel nearby, stop in. Sit and rest in the love of God!

July 26 - Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Today’s readings are all about bread – feeding the hungry. Eucharist, the Bread of Life, is the fulfillment of Jesus’ promise, “I am with you always”. There are many kinds of hunger. Nourished by the Eucharist, it is up to us – yes, each of us – to be attuned to the hunger of those around us. Bring food to the food pantry, of course, but be ready to bring the message and love of Jesus to those in your life who suffer a spiritual hunger.
