Procedural Instructions
COLONOSCOPY
Drink clear liquids only all day, for breakfast, lunch and dinner. No solid foods or milk products are allowed. At 6:00pm take 1 1/5oz of the Fleet Phosho-soda, then another 1 1/5oz at 8pm. After the Fleet’s and before retiring, drink at least five 8oz glasses of clear liquids. You will need someone to drive you home from your procedure, as you will be sedated. This procedure is used to diagnose diseases of the colon, to biopsy abnormal tissue and to remove polyps (small growths). Conversion of measurements and preservation of brand names, possible explanations Words and processes
COLONOSCOPY (continued)
What to expect: an IV will be started, and IV medication will be given to relax and make you sleepy. As you lie on a stretcher, your doctor will insert a small, lighted instrument called a colonoscope through the rectum and into the colon.
Words and procedural understanding
STROKE
The symptoms of a stroke are: numbness or weakness on one side of the body, speech problems such as trouble talking or understanding speech, sudden blindness or dimvision, usually happening in one eye, falls or dizziness for no apparent reason.
Words and ability to explain the symptoms using the right context
BALLOON ANGIOPLASTY
Balloon angioplasty, also known as coronary angioplasty, is used to widen the passageways of obstructed coronary arteries.
Words and understanding of the procedure and definitions
URINE COLLECTION
Urine testing helps diagnose an infection or other medical problems. You will collect the specimen at home. You will receive a collection container and instruction from your doctor’s office or the lab. Be sure to follow the directions carefully. Please check at the outpatient lab to see if a blood sample also needs to be collected.
Concepts and terminology
STRESS ECHOCARDIOGRAM
This test is designed to visualize heart function and screen for possible coronary artery disease. Plan to spend about 1.5 to 2 hours at the facility. EKG leads will be taped to your chest and your heart rate and BP will be recorded. Ultrasound images of the heart are obtained prior to and after exercising on a treadmill. In order to assure good contact throughout the test, your skin may be roughened/shaved where the EKG leads are attached.
Concepts and words, preservation of the correct context using appropriate terminology
CT SCAN WITH IV CONTRAST
(Oral and IV for abdomen, abdomen & pelvis, or pelvis only)
A C/T scanner is a special x-ray machine designed to provide a detailed picture of a part of your body. This C/T scan uses oral or IV contrast medium. The test takes about one hour. You will change into a hospital gown. You will be given an IV contrast material, another final dose of contrast and rectal contrast (only for those with an order for a pelvis CT). As you lie comfortably on the table, the x-ray technologist will start an IV to inject the contrast medium into your bloodstream. After the contrast material begins infusing, the table will move you slowly through the donut shaped scanner.
Concepts and some words
MAMMOGRAM
This special x-ray closely examines the breast tissue for any abnormalities. A mammogram takes 30 minutes to one hour. You will be asked to remove all clothing above the waist and put on a hospital gown.
______
PULMONARY FUNCTION STUDY
This series of breathing tests measures lung volumes and air flows and will help your doctor determine how well your lungs are functioning. You will breathe through a tube connected to a machine that measures the amount of air going in and out of your lungs. Breath holding and vigorous breathing will be required at times. An inhaled medication will be given during the test to measure the response of your lungs to medication.
ULTRASOUND ADULT KIDNEY
This study uses sound waves to provide a detailed picture of the kidneys. No needles, dyes or medications are used. A special gel will be applied to your skin. As you lie on the table, an ultrasound transducer moved over your abdomen will generate pictures of your kidneys. There are no side effects.
NUCLEAR CARDIAC STRESS & REST SCAN WITH DRUG INDUCTION
A stress and rest scan with drug induced exercise uses a radioactive substance (a tracer) to produce images of the heart muscle. When combined with an exercise test, the stress cardiac scan helps determine if areas of the heart do not receive enough blood. The stress and rest scan - drug induced is especially useful in the diagnosis and treatment of coronary artery disease – the presence of blockages in the coronary arteries. After the first scan, approximately 10 adhesives electrodes will be attached to the chest wall. When the doctor arrives, a drug will be given through the IV line to chemically stress the heart. During the test, the Nuclear Medicine technologist will inject a second radioactive material into the IV line.
ADVANCE DIRECTIVES
What is an Advance Directive?
An advanced directive is a written document in which you specify what type of medical care you want in the future should you lose the ability to make decisions. There are two types of advanced directives: Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care and Living Will. A Living Will is a written statement in which you inform doctors and family members what type of medical care you wish to receive should you become terminally ill or permanently unconscious, and unable to make or communicate decisions about your continued care.
