SVQ Award in Business & Administration Level 3
We invite applications for this programme around June each year.
What is an SVQ?
- A vocational qualification based on recognised occupational standards.
- SVQ’s are based on competence in the workplace and therefore, focus on what you are capable of doing in youractual workplace.
Timelines
- It is expected that you will complete the qualification in 10 months (including induction to the programme).
Cost
- £500 per candidate (Edinburgh Napier University Staff) (this may vary)
- This development opportunity is supported by Corporate Learning and Development. If a candidate withdraws from the course, drop out fees will be incurred on a proportionate scale.
SVQ Award in Business & Administration Level 3
You will cover various topics on the programme and then be required todemonstrate and provide evidence of how you use these in the workplace.
It is a different way of learning compared to what you may have been used to and therefore will follow a different structure of learning and support.

Support That You Will Get From Your Line Managers
- Regular meetings (such as 1:1’s) to support you to complete this award.
- Identify and address any development needs.
- You and your managerwill be asked to complete an Application Form prior to attending and to complete other self review/ evaluation templates during the programme.
- Managers will also work with you to review progress against theunits and evaluate any changes in your skills, behaviour, knowledge and motivation from the outset of the programme and as you progress through to completion.
Additional Support Available to You
- There is a structured time line and scheme of work that you will be required to follow.
- Each month you will have a group candidate meeting and action learning set. This will enable you to discuss your progress, provide feedback and be introduced and start work on a Unit each month.
- The SVQ assessor will arrange regular meetings to discuss your work. She will also agree with the group a set time each week where shecan be contactedwith SVQ queries.
- The SVQ assessor will provide Corporate Learning and Development and your managers with monthly updates on your progress.
- The Corporate Learning and Development intranet site has resources, ‘how to’guides and development opportunitiesspecifically for the SVQ and for any additional development you might require to help support your progress.
- Jessica Dall, Development Partner will attend the monthly meetings and be available for any queries or feedback about the SVQ programme from you or your manager.
- Learning Assistant – the SVQ online resource for submitting and completing your qualification also has ‘how to’ guides.
- SVQ Moodle site – has been set up specifically for this programme. There are additional information and templates for each unit in here.
- SVQ mentor – you will have the opportunity to be matched with a mentor at the start of the qualification. This person will have recently completed the SVQ and will be able to support you with their knowledge and experiences.
- Your time investment in this SVQ development opportunity is likely to be 2-3 hours per week in total.1-1.5 hours of weekly work time (the remainder in own time unless agreed otherwise by manager).
Progression
Successful candidates may benefit from career enhancement and can also use the credits achieved to go on to undertake further qualifications or development programmes. You will gain SCQF credits; and other options for moving forward are; doing more SVQ units to gain more SCQF credits; consider becoming a mentor on future SVQ cohorts; share your learning with colleagues, build on your development areas; consider the BABE programme.
Programme Delivery
This qualification is delivered by Edinburgh Napier University and Edinburgh College who provide an internal assessor, internal verifier and virtual learning assistant. The programme is delivered by professional staff developers who have a wealth of experience in SVQ programmes.

Applications are accepted on the SVQ Booking Formwhen invited. In the interim, you should discuss your interest with your line manager and to be added to the waitlist. Please note you and your manager should make yourself as available as possible for the induction dates and group meetings. Dates will be agreed at the outset of the qualification.
